MYRTLEWOOD VERSUS MISS MERRIMENT Noted Sprinters to Meet in Match Race Saturday. Event to Be Staged at Keencland Over Six Furlongs With Each Mare Carrying 118 Pounds. LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 20. Myrtlewood and Miss Merriment will meet at Keeneland in a match race at six furlongs Saturday, it was announced here today by Hal Price Headley, president of the Keeneland Association. The long-awaited clash between the two outstanding older members of their sex was arranged this afternoon between Brow-nell Combs and Maj. Louie A. Beard, the latter representing John Hay Whitney, who came into ownership of Miss Merriment after her race Monday in the New Rochelle Handicap at Empire City. He recently purchased the five-year-old daughter of High Time Nobility from Victor Emanuel. Under the provisions of the match the two mares will carry- 118 pounds, and the Keeneland Association will provide a suitable trophy. It is expected that George South again will ride Myrtlewood, winner of the Keen Handicap and Ashland Stakes here, and that John Gilbert, Whitneys contract rider, will be astride Miss Merriment. Recently Joseph A. Murphy attempted to bring Myrtlewood and Miss Merriment together in a ma tell race at River Downs. Both owners were agreeable as to distance and weights, but a suitable date could not be found because of conflicting engagements Miss Merriment had in New York and Myrtlewood had here. Myrtlewood formerly held the worlds record of 1:10 for six furlongs, which she established at Arlington Park last summer, but this mark was shaded one-fifth of a second by Clang last fall when he defeated the Combs filly by a narrow margin in a match race at Coney Island, now River Downs. Miss Merriments best time for the distance is 1:0954, made this fall in winning the Fall Highweight Handicap at Belmont Park. She carried 127 pounds, but the race was over the straight course. Around a turn Miss Merriments fastest time was 1-104 also at Belmont.
