LANS ALICE IN EASY STYLE Comes From Behind to Score Decisive Victory at Epsom Downs. Five Races on Program at Houston Track Given Over to Sprinters Blue Train Earns Purse. HOUSTON, Texas, Oct. 20. Members of the sprint division predominated on this afternoons offering at Epsom Downs, five of the eight events presented being designed for thoroughbreds partial to the dash distances, while the fifth event, styled the Kelleys Peacock Grill Handicap, at a distance of one mile, headlined the program. Though the attendance was considerably under that of Monday, those present were evidently in a speculative mood, as the "handle" was virtually as large as that of the previous day, when twice as many spectators were on the scene. Typical autumn weather prevailed, and the racing strip was at its best, as demonstrated by the fast time recorded by the cheaper grade performers which met in the early events of the afternoon. FINE PERFORMANCE. The second straight choice of the day ran up to expectations when Lans Alice came from behind to capture the fourth event in easy fashion, which was at five furlongs and comprising seven contestants. The bay filly was two lengths in advance of Oklaqueen, which has finished second in each of her three starts here thus far, and Jessie D. M. third. As usual, it was Jessie D. M. which sprinted into the lead immediately after the field was dispatched, and continued to hold the advantage to the three-sixteenths pole. At thi spoint Lans Alice swept around the outside and, despite the fact that she lost some ground, drew into a length lead a furlong from the wire, increasing the margin to two lengths at the end. The opening race on the card brought together seven sprinters for a dash of five furlongs, and Mrs. E. B. Shipps Morley Firth, displaying a courageous effort, lasted long enough to defeat Mah Grant, the heavily backed favorite, by a head. No Change was only a neck back in third place and a half length in front of Eva R. Morley Firth and Chuck Wagon engaged in a duel from the start, with No Change and Mah Grant not very far behind. After heading into the stretch Morley Firth regained the lead and in a game fight succeeded in holding off the challenge of Mah Grant. Morley Firth was overlooked in the wagering to some extent and as a result paid 0.70 for straight THREE FOR BOARD TRADE. The consistent Board Trade made it three victories and his fourth of the meeting in scoring over six others in the five and a half furlongs second race. Overshoes was second and Kai-Finn drew up in third place, while the best that the favored Transen could do was to take fourth. Overhauling Jay D. after going the first quarter of the trip, Board Trade took a safe lead, which the son of Polymelian Sous Marine maintained to the end, despite the fact that he shouldered top weight of 117 pounds and recorded one of the speediest five and a half furlongs dash in completing the journey in 1:07. Favorite players enjoyed their initial success of the day in the third, another sprint affair, in which W. A. Mikels John Bane was returned an easy winner over Our Spot and Rosy Doon. Our Spot jumped into the lead soon after the start, with John Bane in second place and Sailors Gift third around the far turn. As the final quarter of the six furlongs dash was neared John Bane and Mario charged after the pacemaker, with the former proving better of the challengers. - John Bane assumed the lead when straightened away for the wire and steadily Increased his advantage to two open lengths as the finish line was crossed. Jake Tate loaded his horses and got away for Arlington Downs, Monday night Heading the useful stable is the sprinter Whisking..
