NOTABLE ADDITION TO TURF A. B. Spreckels, Young San Francisco Sportsman, Purchases Five Well-Bred Yearlings for Stable. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Oct. 20. A. B. Spreckels, young San Francisco sportsman and scion of a famous California family, has entered racing, it became known yesterday at Tanforan when it was disclosed that he had recently purchased five fashionably-bred yearlings at the Saratoga sales and that the young thoroughbreds would be shipped immediately to California from Kentucky. Spreckels is the son of the late A. B. Spreckels, famed California sportsman, whose memory was honored at Tanforan Saturday, October 17, when a crack band of two-year-olds went postward in the ,000 added A. B. Spreckels Handicap. The late A. B. Spreckels owned a famous thoroughbred nursery at Napa, Calif., and it was here that Morvich, only California-bred winner of the Kentucky Derby, was bred. Run-star was another noted horse to come from this farm. Spreckels was a member of the group of sportsmen who brought back racing to California in 1923 when a betless meeting was held at Tanforan. Young Spreckels bought three fillies and two colts to start off his turf career and they will be campaigned at Santa Anita this winter and brought back to the northern California tracks in the spring. The yearlings arc said to be exceptional prospects and will be a strong foundation for what might prove to be one of Californias ranking stables in future years. A filly by Man o War from Exalted was the most expensive of the quintet, bringing ,600 after spirited bidding. The others, which averaged between ,500 and ,000, are a filly by Ariel from Starry Heavens: a colt by Fompey from Grief; a filly by Pennant from Ruefel, and a colt by Time Maker from Cackle. Spreckels engaged C. V. Shaw, Jr., noted young trainer and former ace gentleman rider to train for him. Shaw has the horses of Charles E. Perkins, Santa Barbara sportsman and railroad magnate, in training now at Tanforan.
