Continuing his established policy, which calls for a fear ture improvement between each race meeting at Narragansett Park, Walter E. OHara has authorized the expenditure of more than 0,000 for work at the track, some of which is already underway with the remainder to be inaugurated immediately. Heading the program is the complete resurfacing of the one-mile racing strip, a major operation for any race track. For months past, general superintendent E. P. McClain has been scouring the countryside for the finest top-soil, and a few weeks ago he located a huge quantity of sandy loam, ideally adapted for racing purposes. Covering an area of more than twelve acres, the new surface will require 10,000 cubic yards of good mother earth weighing 12,000 tons all of which is to be carted into the park from a distance of ten miles, and every shovelful must be passed through a triple screening process before being set on the course. The old surfaoirig has been removed" and the new, live, springy loam will be laid, rolled, raked and harrowed over a sub-surface of gravel considered the best drained in the land. One hundred and fifty men and thirty trucks will be pressed into service for the project, with the completion date set for August 1st, the day thoroughbreds -will begin to arrive for Narragansetts important summer meeting, which opens on August 16. To facilitate the work of the ever-growing newspaper representation at Narragansett, the spacious publicity department in the administration building is being completely revamped, at- a cost of approximately ,000.
