UPTON IN POPULAR TRIUMPH Overtakes Spring Moon in Late Stages to Capture Honors in Dufferin Headliner. TORONTO, Ont., June 19 Lipton, consistent son of Bachelor Skipper and Briny Breezes, carried the blue and gold silks of the Cosgrave Stable to a popular victory in the University Purse, which featured the inaugural days sport of the spring meeting at Dufferin Park. The winner led home the speedy Spring Moon by a short head in the seven furlongs test and a length back came the Montreal-owned Hittie. Spearman, Trickys Son and Sam Worthy were the others which accepted the issue and finished in. that order. Racing was ushered in at the local track under ideal conditions. Long before the first race went to the post the fans began to gather and after the running of the second; affair it was officially announced that almost 15,000 people were jammed in the compact enclosure. Despite recent rains, the track was termed slow at the outset of the proceedings. After a delay of three and one-half minutes at the barrier the small field left in good order and it was Trickys Son which was first to show in front. However, before they had gone a few yards the fleet-footed Spring Moon took command, followed by Hittie and the ultimate winner. This same order was maintained until heading, into the home stretch, where Lipton overtook Hittie and drove into second place. Spring Moon was still in the van, but under an energetic ride by the clever P. Remillard, who had previously scored on Crinoline, the Cosgrave Stable gelding, was not to be denied and after drawing abreast of the leader had his head in front at the wire. Spring Moon turned in a much improved effort over her most recent races to take the place award. In finishing third, Hittie caused much trouble to the two leaders and at the end was just a little more than a length away from the major award. Sam Worthy could not untrack himself in the footing and was not persevered with in the late stages.
