I THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 NEDAYR Brown colt, by Neddie Sunayr; owned by Willis Sharpe Kilmer. Trainer by W. A. Crawford. By NORRIS ROYDEN Off of what lie did in his final two efforts as a two-year-old, Nedayr earned for himself a ranking very near the top of his division, as well as a position in the rather small group of outstanding three-year-old prospects. Latest of many good developments of Willis Sharpe Kilmers breeding and still in the Binghampton sportsmans possession, Nedayr made himself look like a good colt in scoring his Walden Handicap and Pimlico Futurity victories. Previous to those excellent performances over the Pimlico course, Nedayr had shown flashes of ability, although his seven other efforts had been scattered. But he came to himself as he piled on experience, and his final race was by any comparison his best. Even so it seems doubtful that he reached the peak of his development, which means that he should prove a better three-year-old. Nedayr is a free-running colt, although perhaps not near as bold as War Admiral, but he could carry his speed as far as a mile and one-sixteenth, the distance of the Walden and Pimlico Futurity, and this is as far as two-year-olds are asked to run in this country. A colt capable of running that far as a juvenile ordinarily may be expected to go the longer routes of the three-year-old specials. He has shown in performance his possibilities along this line, but such also is probable by heritage as Nedayrs sire, Neddie, is by Colin, one of the better principals of the Domino line, from a daughter of Light Brigade and a Fair Play mare. Nedayr is from Sunayr, by Sun Briar, from a daughter of Ayrshire, next dam by Bend Or, and this is quality breeding any way you look at it. Neddie is a comparatively young sire, but judging by Nedayr and the unfortunate Ned Reigh, he is destined to earn considerable prestige. Making his first start in May at Belmont Park in a race in which he was outrun, Nedayr had to wait until the middle of August at Saratoga before sporting silks again. This was in a dash of five and one-half furlongs for maidens, in which he flashed to the front early, only to falter towards the close to lose by a neck to Bull Whip in the very respectable time of 1:05. Among those behind the Kilmer colt was Redbreast. His connections were encouraged to start Nedayr next in the Albany Handicap, but he weakened and finished well back, as Sky Larking proved victorious. He escaped from the maiden ranks next time out by stepping five furlongs at Aqueduct in a minute, flat, to defeat Blind Eagle by a head, but in a dash of six furlongs at the same course Nedayr could dp no better than place fourth, beaten two lengths by Specify, as Encore was second and Quick Devil, third. Showing but very little improvement in his sixth outing, the son of Neddie took third honors in an overnight race at Belmont, being beaten by about four lengths by Mountain Ridge as Bourbon King was second, and then was shipped to Laurel where, in his only start, he took second honors in the Richard Johnson Stakes. Teddys Comet defeated Nedayr a length in this race, but the latter colt displayed fine speed after a slow beginning. In the space of three weeks before starting in the Walden, Nedayr found himself and with 112 pounds up he went prominently in that mile and one-sixteenth race from the start and stood a long drive gamely to defeat Sir Raleigh by a head, the latter carrying only 95 pounds. His time was 1:45, which Nedayr excelled by three-fifths of a second iri winning the Pimlico Futurity, in much easier fashion, although burdened with 122 pounds. Leading all the way and having considerable in reserve at the finish, Nedayr won the Futurity by two lengths over Jacola, best of the fillies, as Dauber was third, Bourbon King fourth, and other good youngsters trailing. Such a performance speaks for itself. fDomino 5 Himyar f Commando.......... - 7 Mannie Gray - LEmmaC . Darebin i e J . - l Guenn ; f t u - f Springfield..... j St.. Albans IPastorella........... J .
