j . .. , . . y-. Twenty Years of Future Books on KENTUCKY DERBY and the Results 1922 .......... . T L t Morvich was one of the so-called "sprinters" that won a Kentucky Derby. He accomplished the feat in 1922, the first year in which the Derby purse amounted to 50,000 or more. From the standpoint of time he ranks right up with some of the more highly-regarded horses which won succeeding Derby renewals. Morvich was owned by Ben Bloch of New York and was the champion two-year-old of 1921. His position In public esteem and with turf regulars was something in the nature of the light in which Mrs. JEthel V. Mars Tiger is regarded today. They doubted he could go the Derby Toute and "go it" fast enough to beat the cream of the years three-year-old crop. He opened at 5 to 1 in the future books and he was so highly regarded by the players that his opponents, that is those horses which figured to have a chance with him, commanded 20 to 1 and upwards. The regulars had nothing to play against him, even if they doubted his staying ability. The general public, however, figured him as. "in" and they bet accordingly. On May 8 at the closing of the future books Morvich was 4 1-2 to 1. Deadlock, Startle and Busy American were 15 to 1 each. Startle was quite a filly as a juvenile, but like all of her sex except Regret, played no leading part in the actual race. She finished well back in the big race, with Morvich romping home before Bet Mosie and John Finn and paying only 6 to 5 in the mutuels. Bet Mosie, a Bradley horse, was second choice because he had two running mates, By Gosh and Busy American. Following are the opening future book prices on the 1922 Derby, the fluctuations, the mutuel prices and the order of finish of the race: March April May Finish of Derby 13 3 8 Starting Odds Odds Odds Odds Morvich 5 3 4 $ 1.20 to 1 Bet Mosie 50 20 t2.90 to 1 John Finn .20 30 20 22.60 to 1 Deadlock .. 50 15 6.90 to 1 My Play 100 ... 19.05 to 1 Letterman 200 . . . 24.80 to 1 Surf Rider .. 25 20 35.75 to 1 Startle . . 20 25 15 13.90 to 1 By Gosh... 50 ... t2.90 to 1 Busy American 50 15 2.90 to 1 Horses are listed according to finish of race, f Coupled as Idle Hour Stock Farm Stable entry.
