FIVE WINNING POSTS? One of the best North Country, England, jockeys in the. "sixties" was Jem Snowden. Unfortunately he was over-addicted to the bottle; but he never tried to hide this weakness from himelf or others. One day he was asked not to win by more than a neck, as it was a selling race and the horses owner was desirous of buying it in cheaply. Contrary to instructions, Jem made the running and won by several lengths. At the subsequent auction, Jems patron had to pay dearly to get his horse back. The owner complained bitterly to the jockey. "You ought to think yourself lucky to win at all," was Jems reply, "as I saw j five winning posts, and didnt know which i was the right one." I
