LIVELY WEEK IN PROSPECT Return of Pleasant Weather Stirring Trainers of Derby Candidates to Renewed Activity. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 11. Adverse weather has somewhat curtailed the training activities of Kentucky Derby eligibles the last few days at Churchill Downs, but the return of pleasant conditions Sunday indicated a lively week for the nominees for the 0,000 added special to be presented here on Saturday, May 7. The rain, snow, cold and muddy track did not entirely stop the progress of the candidates, but owners and trainers were inclined to be more cautious with their charges with a result that few of the crack three-year-olds were permitted to extend themselves. A canvass of the stables revealed that practically all of the trainers of Derby horses are satisfied with the present condition of their eligibles and desire only a fair share of good weather to have them ready for the mile and a quarter test, which may land one of them in turfdoms hall of fame. The four principal candidates which have been on the scene some time, Herbert M. Woolfs Lawrin, Myron Selznicks Cant Wait, and Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Tiger and Mountain Ridge, have done all that has been asked of them thus far. None of them has been called upon to show his best speed, but they have taken their exercises without interruption and before long they will be giving work watchers something to talk about. CANDIDATES ON SCENE. Other candidate; on the scene, including Bert Friends Co-Sport; J. S. Hawkins Pepper; Mrs. Payne Whitneys Gangplank and Perfect Peace; Mrs. Mars Farrell and C-Note; Edward Graters Cooks Memorial; J. C. Stones Stands Alone; Mrs. Thelma Otts Employer; Woolfs Joe Schenck and Morris Vehons Invincible; also are showing progress and it is not unlikely that as Derby Day nears some of these will work their way into that select group which will be considered probable starters in the rich three-year-old classic. Lawrin, Tiger, Co-Sport and Cant Wait have had the advantage of winter racing and their conditioners point out, they will not require a lot of work to fit them for the Derby, while Mountain Ridge has been showing to advantage in his trials, having covered three-quarters in company with C-Note in 1:20 over a track which was deep in mud. Of the horses which wintered in Kentucky Stands Alone and Pepper appears to be the most advanced, the former having been a mile in as gcd as 1:46 and the latter having covered eight furlongs in the mud last Saturday in 1:54.
