Kentucky Derbys of Past-Charts and Future Books 1932 - 4 The year of 1932 was notable in Kentucky Derby history chiefly because of the number of outsiders in the future book betting that got to the post, although a "medium" priced horse in the futures won the race. That was Burgoo King, the third Bradley horse to carry off the famous race. Bradleys penchant for winning derbys was the reason Burgoo King was quoted at only 30 to 1 when the layers first announced their line on the Derby. Sixteen out of the twenty starters were 100 to 1 in the opening line. Top Might, the great Whitney filly, was the favorite at 8 to 1. She dropped to 4 to 1 one month after the wagering began, but she failed to get to the post. Tick On was fancied next to Top Flight, and was the choice in the closing quotations and became favorite in the mutuel wagering on Derby Day at less than 2 to 1. Burgoo King went down steadily in the waning days of April, jumped to 8 in early May, and a few days before the Derby was 5 to 1. He paid more than that at post time. No great horses came out of that race, although Gallant Sir gained some measure of fame in later life by twice winning the Agua Caliente Handicap, although that race had fallen from its high estate and was only a 5,000 added race in the two years in which he won. Burgoo King never amounted to much after completing the Derby Preakness double. The chart of the race is here presented: FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Twenty Grand, May 16, 1931 2 :01 3 126. Start good out of machine. Won easily; second and third driving. BURGOO KING, away fast and well rated, followed the pace closely until reaching the final three-eighths, where he easily wore down ECONOMIC and, drawing into decisive command, won easilyr ECONOMIC, taken into the load, set the pace under good rating, was no match for the winner, but held on well, outlasting STEPENFETCHIT. The latter saved considerable ground in the early stages, was under restraint until reaching the closing half-mile, rallied mildly when taken to the outside in the stretch and was wearing down ECONOMIC. BRANDON MINT moved up fast on the stretch turn and, despite lack of room, was going boldly in the final stages. OVER TIME held on stubbornly in a good performance. TICK ON, much used at the post and in close quarters most of the way, could not reach the leaders when clear and was under hard pressure in the final quarter. OUR FANCY had no mishaps. GALLANT SIR quit. ADOBE POST had a rough race. LIBERTY LIMITED fell badly lame and was pulled up.
