29 ELIG1BLES ON SCENE Technician and Xalapa Clown Are Outstanding Candidates at Downs. Milky Way Farms Seven Nominees Swell Number of Derby Horses Now in Training at Louisville. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 8. Although few of them are considered among the first flight candidates for the 0,000 added feature, twenty-nine eligibles for the Kentucky Derby are at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park being prepared for the race which is to be renewed on Saturday, May 6. The biggest set of eligibles arrived here this week when the Milky Way Farms stable arrived at the Downs with seven three-year-olds which have been named for the Derby. While all of them still remain potential Derby horses, No Competition and On Location appear the most likely reliances of the stable. Trainer Roy Waldron is entertaining hopes of getting both of them to the post in the lig race. On Location disappointed in the recent running of the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park, a race which was won by another Kentucky Derby horse, H. W. Jacksons Ariel Toy, but the son of Teddy may not have been at his best that afternoon and hopes are held that he will show enough improvement here to merit a chance in the Churchill Downs special. NO COMPETITION ADVANCED. No Competition, which raced successfully with some of the best two-year-olds out last year, is well advanced in his conditioning and at this time he stands out as the No. 1 candidate in the Milky Way barn. The other Derby eligibles in this powerful establishment are Up the Creek, Giles County, Magic Key, Sports Writer and Rule All, the latter a filly which probably will be reserved for the Kentucky Oaks. Still ranking as the outstanding candidates on the scene are Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Xalapa Clown, unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old and runner-up to Ciencia in the Santa Anita Derby this year, and Herbert M. Woolfs Technician. If nothing happens to interrupt their training, these two are considered certain starters in the Derby. Having raced during the winter, Technician and Xalapa Clown have not been asked to display much in the way of speed in their morning trials since arriving at the Downs. But both are in excellent physicial trim and being in able hands, should come up to their Derby engagements ready for their best. Xalapa Clown is being put through his paces by A. C. Dettwiler while Technicians preparation is being supervised by B. A. Jones, who saddled Woolfs Lawrin for his Kentucky Derby victory last year. OUT OF DERBY. Mrs. Franzheim has another Derby eligible here in Black Bun while Woolf has two others in Inscoelda and Sabariel, but they are not being considered for that race. Black Bun just recovered from an attack of illness, Inscoelda, hailed as the champion juvenile filly of last year, has been declared out of the Churchill Downs feature by her owner, and Sabariel, the stable feels, does not come up to Derby requirements. Inscoelda is probably intended as a starter in the Oaks. Among the lesser lights in the Derby colony which have been training well are J. C. Milams Decatur and Opelika; William E. Smiths Buffalo Bill; Emerson F. Woodwards Viscounty; Baylor O. Hickmans Avesta; John Marschs Lightspur and Junius W. Bells Steel Heels. All of these three-year-olds are far advanced in their training, and although none of them is being given serious consideration for the Derby, it is not entirely unlikely that several of them will be seen under colors when the field lines up for the mile and a j quarter race May 6. Buffalo Bill has shown to particular advantage in his morning spins and so has Viscounty, while Decatur and Opelika have displayed more than common running qualities. Avesta, the only Derby eligible training at Douglas Park at this time, is rounding into splendid form and so are Steel Heels and Lightspur. POINTED FOR KENTUCKY OAKS. i A filly eligible for the Derby, which has been training well, is Morris Vehons Smart Trick, but like Inscoelda and Rule All, her first important engagement of the spring likely will come in the Kentucky Oaks. Other Kentucky Derby nominees already on the scene are Harold Crouchs Scotch Trap, Fetter and Browns Tack Point, Klein and Marschs Weisenheimer, Dan Lehans Fern Creek, F. P. Letelliers Southland Gem, T. E. Muellers Timeful, H. S. Chittendens Wapello and Mrs. Kate Weils Sleepy Tom and Buddy Rogers. Wapello is an interesting entry, for he never saw a recognized race track before he was shipped to Churchill Downs from the Iowa farm of his owner. At least four other Derby eligibles are due in Louisville momentarily and they, too, rank among the outsiders. They are Mrs. John D. Hertz Gala Hour and Book Plate, E. R. Morris Briery and Ramsey and Smiths Mor-decai.
