! THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 ALLEGRO By NOBBIS BOYDEN n Allegro wasnt nominated for the Kentucky Derby, but that doesnt mean he hasnt an excellent chance of developing into a good three-year-old. What might prevent the gelded son of High Time and Brenda, by Johren, from proving a star of the division is inability to go over a route, but the staying quality of some of the other leading prospects can be doubted until it has been proven otherwise. The vast majority of High Times get were ineffectual in distance races and most of them were sprinters pure and simple, but Sarazen was one shining exception and Allegro can be another. He is a fellow with lots of class and if disposed to extend his speed beyond the sprinting -distances, Charles T. Fishers Dixiana colorbearer may gain ranking in the top flight. Although not entered in the Derby, Allegro has been kept eligible for the Arlington Classic and that is an indication of what his connections think of his prospects. Allegro made a dozen starts as a juvenile, winning seven of them and finishing second in four others. His lone disappointing effort was in the Arlington Futurity, in which he finished well back but his performance was much too poor to be true. He simply displayed too much speed against good youngsters in some of his other engagements before and after the Futurity for that failure to count very much against him. Although never tested beyond six. furlongs, Allegro displayed some promise of going a longer distance in the Breeders Futurity, in which he made up many lengths through the stretch to finish just an inch or two back of Johnstown, which he had headed in the next stride. He probably would have captured that important event but for an error of judgment on the part of jockey Joe Rosen, who attempted to send Allegro through on the inside at the furlong pole but was blocked and had to ease back his mount before being able to guide him to the outside, where he put on his sensational finishing rush. Just prior to the Breeders Futurity, Allegro had established a new Keeneland record of 1:10 for six furlongs in coming from behind to nip Olney. In the Futurity he met some sort of difficulty in settling into his stride after the start, that accounted for him I being a trailer in the early stages. I After winning or placing in his first five starts, Allegro gained his first important 1 triumph in the Moslem Temple Stakes at Detroit. The track was muddy, but he easily defeated Porters Mite, the colt destined to take the great Belmont Futurity. He then moved on to Arlington Park to finish at, the heels of Beau James in the Hyde Park Stakes, after making up a couple of lengths in the final furlong. His Arlington Futurity engagement was next. Given a vacation through August and part of September, Allegro returned to campaigning by taking an overnight race at Latonia as a prelude to the Queen City Handicap, which went to hfm by three lengths over Steel Heels, as Sky Ball was third and Flying Bonny was fourth. His two outings at Keeneland followed. In nearly all of his races, although sprints, Allegro was either drawing away at the wind-up or was gaining on the winner, which strengthens the belief he may not be found at a disadvantage in races over longer routes, at least over middle distances. It may be interesting to note that Allegro comes out of the same female family to which Benefactor belongs. His dam was by Johren, a son of Spearmint from a Meddler mare, while his second dam was by Whisk Broom IT., the third by Hamburg and thence into a family of high-class French horses. Jimmy Smith, the new Dixiana trainer, is in no hurry about getting Allegro to the .races, as he is anxious to bring him up in the best possible fashion. .
