---------------------------T Here and There on the Turf Bad Weather Hurts Bowie Hurley Had Eye on Derby Preeminent Is Stud Prospect Jones Makes Prediction t... . . . , ---..4 Too much bad weather is preventing the Bowie meeting from proving successful. . . . Despite the rain and off track, the patronage should be better. . . . The Maryland situation just doesnt seem as happy as should be. Bowies officials are hopeful of good weather during the final week so a loss may be avoided. . . . Day Off will not race at Keeneland. . . . He is not among the four Greentree Stable eligibles to the Blue Grass Stakes. . . . The son of Royal Minstrel and Easy Day will be pointed for the Chesapeake Stakes and will be shipped to Havre de Grace several days prior to the running of that 5,000 event. . . . Trainer John Gaver sees an excellent chance of further improvement in Day Off. . . . Third Degree and Hash appear to be Greentrees principal hopes for the Blue Grass. . . . The former, especially, has wintered well and, although he has not grown much, has filled out considerably. Benefactors injury was a serious blow to trainer William Hurley. . . . He had the colt extremely well advanced in his preparation for the Kentucky Derby. . . . Hurley has trained horses long enough to take such mishaps philosophically, but wonders why Benefactor had to be the one among forty horses he is conditioning at Idle Hour Farm to be injured. He continues hopeful that the injury will clear up soon enough for resumption of training in time to get Benefactor ready for the Derby. No chances will be taken, though. Hurley had nothing to do with the training of E. R. Bradleys four Kentucky Derby winners, although associated with that sportsman nearly all the time the latter has been in racing. The veteran horseman won the Louisiana Derby with Bagen Baggage and saddled that colt to finish second behind his stablemate, Bubbling Over, in the Churchill Downs classic. Boot to Boot also captured the, American Derby the same year under Hurleys guidance. Francis Albertanis appointment as the Bay Meadows publicity man gladdened the hearts of his many friends throughout the country. . . . William P. Kyne put a ring around a winner in selecting Alhertani. . . . Hes just finished a grand job in telling the world about the beauty and advantages of Oriental Park. . . . The Cuban tracks comeback in racing appears good for some years to come. . . . Preeminent will not be a starter in the Paumonok Handicap. . . . Now seven years of age, the son of Supremus and Star Class, by Star Shoot, finds the infirmities he suffered in his early campaigns too much to overcome to continue competition with the best sprinters in the country. . . . He was good enough last season to include five stakes among his half dozen victories. . . . Preeminent is a good looking horse, is bred well enough and had the performance to be a fine stud prospect. Ben Jones made the prediction after Law-rin won the Kentucky Derby last spring that he would saddle this years winner of the classic in Technician. . . . The capable Missouri horseman already is eyeing the 1940 Derby running. His principal hope is In-scolad. . . . He is a brother to Technician both being by Insco from Glister. . . . Appointment of Buddy Wingfield to succeed Eddie Thomas as starter at Hollywood Park came as a complete surprise everywhere. . . . California turf enthusiasts should like Wingfields work, however. . . . Operating in June and July, Hollywood will give Wing-field and his crew employment between the spring and summer meetings at Narragan-sett Park. . . . Except for a short visit to his Covington home, Wingfield will go directly from Tropical Park to the Rhode Island track for the opening of the spring meeting there a week from Saturday. Alex B. Gordon can be expected to be among those present when Jamaica opens Saturday. . . . Back in the best of health, the veteran turfman is impatient for the opening. . . . He still cant see any comparison between the oral and pari-mutuel methods c- wagering which is why he will be at Jamaica instead of Keeneland this weekend. . . . The Metropolitan Jockey Club has issued invitations to a buffet luncheon at the Jamaica course Thursday. . . . Oak-lawn Parks meeting vas off about fifteen per cent from the 1938 session. . . . More than the usual amount of inclement weather was a factor in the decline. . . . Ariel Toy will make the Chesapeake Stakes his next engagement. . . . The Arkansas Derby winner will not try for the Wood Stakes because it comes only a week before the Kentucky Derbv. . . . After the Chesapeake the good Ariel colt will be sent to Churchill Downs so that he can have at least two goods trials over the Louisville course.
