DERBY WORKOUTS INCREASE Training Work Reaches New High Mark at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park Courses. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 8. Kentucky Derby nominees figured prominently in training at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park and reached a new high for the season today. Fast footing prevailed at both tracks, but the weather was quite raw as penetrating winds swept the courses. Light rain fell intermittently, but it had no effect on either of the courses. All activity on the part of Derby eligibles was confined to the Downs where Technician, Xalapa Clown and eight other candidates for the 0,000 race were seen in beneficial training moves. Technician breezed three-quarters of a mile in 1:21 while Xalapa Clown, accompanied by Gay Troubadour, opened up with three-eighths in :39. Other moves by Derby j i horses included the following: Lightspur, three-quarters in 1:19 breezing; Tack Point, three-quarters in 1:20 breezing; Fern Creek, mile in 1:48 handily; Sleepy Tom, five-eighths in 1:02 driving; Opelika and Decatur, three-eighths in :35, from the starting gate, and Steel Heels and Southland Gem, three furlongs in :39 breezing. Roy Waldron, trainer of the Milky Way Farm stable, reported that all the six Derby colts he worked yesterday afternoon came out of their easy trials in good style. This group consisted of Giles County, On Location, No Competition, Sports Writer, Up the Creek and Magic Key and each worked three-quarters of a mile on a dull track. Giles County was timed in 1:19 while Magic Key and On Location were caught in 1:20 and the others in 1:21, all breezing. Waldron regards No Competition as the stables best Derby prospect. a a
