OFFICIALS AT NARRAGANSETT Pawtucket Course Announces Names of Men Supervising Sport. Tom Thorp, Sam Nuckols and Frank Bryan, Serving as Stewards Robert Shelley Secretary. PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 17. The expectation that under the administration of Governor William H. Vanderbilt, horse racing would be divorced entirely from politics5 was confirmed today with the announcement of Narragansetts official family for the 1939 season. From top to bottom the officials named are veterans of from ten to fifty years of experience in racing. Selection of such a capable staff, officially approved by state administrator of racing, Louis C. Gerry, was taken by horsemen to indicate the intention of the administration to insist that racing men shall conduct racing in Rhode Island. The new officials, appointed by the track with the approval of the racing administrator, are as follows: Stewards, judge Frank Bryan, Tom Thorp and Sam Nuckols; no eulogy is necessary for this trio. Placing judges, Howard Reynolds, Pat Galliger and William "Duke" Dahlstrom. Galliger, who will double as first assistant to racing secretary Bob Shelley, is a veteran official. He is no stranger to Narragansett, haying served as assistant to racing secretary Jack Campbell here in 1934. He is at present racing secretary for ten tracks in eastern Canada. Dahlstrom will also double in brass, serving as clerk of scales. Tommy Steele, of Shelleys staff, will serve as patrol judge with Harry Fiske, a veteran horseman and a native Rhode Islander. Steele will also act as paddock judge. The much strengthened staff will include Bob Shelley as racing secretary and "Buddy" Wingf ield, starter, with their assistants prac-. tically the same as of last year. Judge James E. Dooley, president of Narragansett Racing Association, believes the staff of officials as approved today, is by far the strongest and most capable ever to preside at a New England race track."
