M..........,,;,.... 11, ,f Kentucky Derbys of Past Charts and Future Books I 1926 :-b-- . - - 4 The spring of 1926 saw the famous green and white silks of E. R. Bradley, owner Of Idle Hour Farm, score its second "one-two" victory in a Kentucky Derby, Bubbling Over, a son of North Star III., the unfortunate but brilliant English colt, A. K. Macomber, imported, outfinishing his stablemate, Bagenbaggage, to duplicate Behave Yourselfs and Black Servants "one-two" triumph of 1921. The early future book choice that season was Pompey, which later "sired Pompoon. Pompey opened at 5 to 1, Canter was 8, and Bubbling Over 10. Display, later the sire of Discovery, was a 20 to 1 chance. As the betting progressed, Bubbling Over and Bagenbaggage both dropped in price until they could only be had at the extremely short odds of 2 to 1, Pompey calling for half a point more. The 1926 field was also one of the. topnotch Derby aggregations, and foK lowing Bubbling Over and Bagenbaggage past the finish line in third place was Rock Man, a 200 to 1 future book play. Pompey followed Rhinock home in fifth place. Display was very nearly last. Bubbling Oyer was considered the star of Bradley Derby stars until Blue Larkspur arrived on the scene, but the latter, like his sire, Black Servant, also a better horse than Behave Yourself, did not win the Derby. Others unplaced in the 1926 Derby that later developed into stars were Espino, Canter, Blondin and Roycrofter, as a glance over the chart of the race reveals: FIFTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. BUBBLING OVER raced into the lead at once and, setting a great pace under restraint, showed the way until the stretch, where his rider permitted him to sprint away from- the others and win away offby himself. BAGENBAGGAGE began slowly but, making up ground gamely, passed the others and finished a fast-going second. ROCK MAN raced prominently from the start, but was tiring and just lasted to save third place. RHINOCK came with a surprising rush near the end. POMPEY was done after racing well for three-quarters and had no mishaps. ESPINO raced well. CANTER was close up for most of the way, but quit in the stretch.
