SARATOGAS INAUGURAL -Famous Spa Meeting Begins With Two Stake Features. Eighteen in Flash Stakes and Ten in American Legion Handicap Steeplechase on Card. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., July 29. With eighteen youngsters named for the sixty-fifth running of the Flash Stakes, and ten three-year-olds and upward, entered for the thirteenth running of the American Legion Handicap, the Saratoga Association is equipped with a scintillating program for the opening day of its thirty-day meeting. In addition to the two stakes, the opening day card lists four other races on the flat and a steeplechase, at about two miles. The opening number, a five-and-one-half-furlong test, is for maiden two-year-old colts and geldings, and closed with twenty-two entrants. Only five jumpers were named for the second affair through the field, but the third, an allowance race at six furlongs and for three-year-olds and upward, attracted sixteen entrants. ONE CLAIMING EVENT. The program lists only one claiming event on the flat. This is a mile and a furlong race for three-year-olds and upward, and will be offered as the night cap. The sixth event drew only a half dozen entrants, but .they are of stake quality for the most part and add considerable strength to the program. This contest will be over one mile. The Flash, with an estimated value of ,625, holds fourth, place on the card. Named to battle it out over five and one-half furlongs for the long end of the purse are: Mrs. Eva S. Spilmans Great General, 107; Gre entree Stables Yes or No, 107, and Cherry Trifle, 110; Mrs. George D. Wideners Epatant, 110, and Call to Arms, 107; Mae-mere Farms Maetran, 110; W. E. Boeings The Malahat, 110; Paragon Stables Great Albert; 110; Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitneys Parasang, 110; A. Townsend WinmilFs Son of War, 110; William F. Hitts Last Call, 107; Mrs. Elizabeth Graham Lewis Noon Step, 110; Johny Hay Whitneys Woof Woof, 110; Hal Price Headleys Third Covey, 110; Wheatley Stables Merry Knight, 110, and Wm. Ziegler, Jr.s, Ballast Reef, 110. DOUBTFUL STARTERS. Four of these youngsters Call to Colors, Yes or No, Rouslan and Last Call have been named for the programs opener and therefore are regarded as doubtful starters in the stake. Since Great Albert was a starter at Empire City on Saturday in the Wakefield Handicap, it is believed he, too, will be withdrawn from the Flash. There is a chance, however, that trainer Jake Byer will elect to start the youngster right back. The American Legion Handicap, at seven furlongs and with an estimated value of ,950, will be the fifth race of the day. The entrants are: Willis Sharpe Kilmers Nedayr, Continued on thirty-eighth page. SARATOGATINAUGURAL Continued from first page. 114; Joseph E. Wideners Rodin, 98, and Knickerbocker, 109; Geo. D. Wideners Birch Rod, 106; Greentree Stables Roll and Toss, 104, and Armor Bearer, 108; Brandy wine Stables Bull Whip, 106; Mrs. Louise Viaus Conquer, 109; Millsdale Stables Isaroma, 108, and Howard Bruces Jay Jay, 108. Because of the presence in the Flash field of a couple of first-time starters Yes or No and Call to Colors and because so many of the entrants have been on the sidelines for weeks, mostly because they fell victims in the spring to the epidemic of coughing, the race must be regarded as wide open. The general tendency is to make the Green-tree entry co-favorite with Merry Knight. Th latter raced disappointingly in his most recent outing May 15 when he was beaten by Equistar, but he still is regarded by many astute horsemen as the best young- ster in James Fitzsimmons charge. Yes or No, chestnut son of Questionnaire and Gallant Lass, is reputed to be something of a whirlwind. An idea of his ability may be gained from his most recent work, six furlongs in 1:14. Ahead of that, on July 24, he sped six furlongs in 1:14. I I i I
