i INCREASE AT EMPIRE CITY Management Reports a Substantial Gain Over Last Year to New York Racing Commission. NEW YORK, N. Y., July 29. The management of the Empire City race track has reported to the New York State Racing Commission that the first weeks of its present meeting show gains in public patronage substantially above those of the corresponding days of racing last year. The attendance for the three weeks, or eighteen days of racing, was 174,880, as compared to 153,721 for the same days in 1938; an increase of 21,159, or 13.7 per cent. The gate receipts were 74,172, as compared to 12,950; a gain of 1,222, or 14.8 per cent. The tax earned by the state was 8,751, as against 2,137; a gain of ,614, or 10.6-per cent. The increases at the track are especially gratifying to its management in view of the fact that many of the leading stables have already shipped their horses to Saratoga, with a consequent narrowing in sizes of fields. The track closed its present meeting Saturday.
