QUATERNARY was never far from the lead, moved to the front when CRIMEA began tiring and, responding gamely to punishment, had enough left to stave off the stretch bid of BARBARA A. The latter was slow to begin, worked her way up gradually on the inside through the back stretch, came to the outside for the closing drive and finished determinedly. APPREHEND trailed his field for the first three-eighths, responded gamely in the stretch and finished going willingly. LITTLE MIKE, well placed, saved ground into the stretch, loomed up threateningly entering the stretch, but was unable to keep pace during the closing eighth. CRIMEA, lacking his customary early speed, was unable to draw clear and faltered after going a half mile. JACKIE D. was unable to threaten and was driven out an additional quarter mile. GENERAL R. was j rated along back of the pace and responded gamely to hard urging through the stretch. SIR TIME worked his way up gradually and came gamely in the final drive. MUGAL closed some ground in the closing drive. STEPACOLA, in close quarters rounding the first turn, moved up steadily on the inside through the back stretch, was caught in a jam and taken up sharply and was unable to gain racing room until the last sixteenth. ROUGH PASS, in pursuit of the pace for the first fiya-sixtcenths and slightly restrained, was placed under hard riding near, the stretch, came to the outside and responded gamely to wear down ABRASION, then increased his advantage in the closing seventy yards. ABRASION, prominent from the start, met determined early opposition from EXARCH, disposed of him and, moving clear, fought it out courageously when challenged. CARDELL, unable to keep pace early, was brought to the outside when reaching the stretch and Finished strongly. MULTITUDE, away fast, was unable to keep pace during the closing drive. MODEST QUEEN, prominent from the start, followed along in nearest pursuit of HASTY STAR until straightening out in the stretch, came through on the inside of the pacemaker, gained command and drew clear at the end. PHARABOY followed along in near attendance of the pace, bore out badly on the stretch turn and finished gamely well out beyond the middle of the track. HASTY STAR went to the front in the first strides and opened up a good lead, but was -unable to keep pace when challenged through the closing eighth. GREEDAN closed ground after racing far back esrly. SAVITAR whs unable to engage the leaders. GRAND PAGEANT was outrun. NIJINSKY tired after the first three-eighths. MARDROMEL, far back early, began giving improved speed through the last five-sixteenths and was going determinedly at the end. COUNTESS LENA drew away into a long early lead, held on gamely when challenged, but tired through the last eighth. BALAPIN, in closest pursuit of the pace, tired when placed under punishment.
