SERIOUS LABOR SHORTAGE WASHINGTON, D. C, July 29 Serious labor shortages are placing an increasing strain on the economic resources of Germany, the Commerce Department reported today. In May, applications for jobs in Germany numbered 987,000 against 1,700,000 vacant positions, it was said. This shortage of skilled laborers, the department noted, has extended to Austria and the Sudeten-land, and has forced the German government to import about 40,000 workers from Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia. So serious has been the shortage of agriculture labor that the government has curtailed the summer term at German universities and colleges by two weeks to release 25,000 students for harvesting work.
