Favorites to Fore At Suffolk Downs Rodin Becomes Fifth Choice On Card to Score in Taking Beachmont Purse in Drive BOSTON, Mass., May 19. Despite the adverse track conditions which prevailed here today, chalk players had their innings as one favorite after another bowed to the judges at Suffolk Downs today. C. E. Nelsons Rodin, a gelded son of Chance Shot, who had finished second to Ksar of Audley over a muddy racing strip at Pimlico in his last outing while running with a ,750 price tag attached, was the fourth favorite in a row and the fifth on the card to win as he drove to his second score of the year in the Beachmond Purse, one mile and seventy yards allowance event, fashioned to attract older horses in grade "C." Mrs. E. J. Montis English Setter, who got to the front around the turn, gave way to the winner in the drive down the stretch, finishing second three-quarters of a length away from the winner, and a length before S. A. Nielsens Fancy Free. That gelded son of Traumer came from far back to pick up the show award, a length before Benjamin F. Listers Gold Tower, an early contender. Carrying considerable support, Rodin paid .80 for in the mutuels. The Nelson gelding was ridden by Henri Mora. Away from the gate, Mrs. Dorothy Roberts Jay Stevens, Gold Tower and English Setter battled for command. Going down the back stretch, however, Gold Tower got to the front by the narrowest of margins, while Jay Stevens and English Setter remained in the contention. At this point, Rodin, who was last to leave the gate, began to move up. Going into the turn, English Setter took over command temporarily, with Gold Tower racing along second. Not so far out of it at this point after having made up considerable ground going down the back stretch was Rodin. English Setter Runner-Up English Setter was still on top turning for home and in the stretch, but Rodin wa responding nicely to Moras exacting demands and he managed to get to the top between the eighth pole and the sixteenth pole. The Monti colt "hung on stubbornly to retain the place. The winning Daily Double combination was D. J. Sullivans Rissa and Bayard Tuckerman, Jr.s On the Cuff. Those who backed this combination received a 0 return for their investment. In annexing the opening event, a six-furlong dash, Rissa led from end to end except for a few strides when she swung wide rounding the turn for home. Dinner Jacket got to the front temporarily there but gave way to the winner in the final drive as she hung up her second straight victory while negotiating the "off" track in 1:15. Lost Gold collected the show award before Catapult. On the Cuff, who was graduating in his fifth start, went to the front at once and drove to his initial score three-quarters of a length before Mokananne. The latter had the same margin before Agradel, an early contender. A neck back of that one, Lady Bob wound up fourth. The Tuckerman gelding paid 0.80 for . John R. Macombers Galafire won the Charles River Purse, six-furlong special weights event for maiden three-year-olds, which was third on the card from end to end.- The chestnut son of Tintagel and Firetop, she by Man o War, bounced the distance in 1:15 without ever being extended and won with considerable to spare.
