The Acorn Stakes, a run of one mile, for three-year-old fillies, has attracted a surprisingly large field of sixteen of the seasons glamour girls in its twelfth running as the bright, particular attraction on tomorrows mid-week program down at verdant Belmont Park. The considerable lure of the Acorns 0,000 endowment, its relatively short distance and the further fact this division hasnt yet developed a standout performer has encouraged the entry of a jam-packed field that includes several remarkably unremarkable eligibles. i Best qualified of. the lot is the rakish brown filly, Vagrancy, who races for The Jockey Club chairman.-William Woodward, and already this spring has placed the important Pimlico Oaks to her credit. In a contest in which each starter carries the scale of 121, Vagrancy will be "there or thereabout," in the "tote" speculation, at least. For in a handicap she doubtless would be required to concede the others weight. Chiquita Mia in Headliner Vagrancy has her work cut out for her however. Though she has drawn number 1 in the- stalls, the leggy daughter of Sir Gallahad m., is no flash from the gate and the unwildy - field would militate somewhat against hex chances. Maj. C. V. "Sonny" Whitneys home-grown Mackerel, a winner at Jamaica and W. W. Crenshaws light-footed Zaca Rosa, with an impressive accounting at the current Belmont session to her credit, are two who appear assured of strong support in the Acorn. Others of the field whove exhibited good I form are Lavann Stables Chuckle, C. S. Howards Chiquita Mia, Jock Whitneys The Swallow, Brookmeades Smiles and Arnold Hangers Light Lady. Rounding out the band are H. P. Headleys Lotopoise, George Wideners Umbril, W. M. Jeffords Red Rosette, A. A. Baronis Bonnet Ann, Myron Selznicks Joans Tip, Foxcatchers Copperette, J. E. Wideners Tribal Ruler and Glen Riddles Navy Cruiser. The Acorn is a kind of stepping stone to the 0,000 Coaching Club American Oaks, most fashionable three-year-old filly stake on this side of the Atlantic and which is to be renewed at Belmont Park on Wednesday, the 27th. It. bears much the same relation to the Oaks as the 1,000 Guineas in England bears to the Epsom Oaks. Incidentally, the American Oaks this year will be over the searching mile and a half route. A number -of the Acorn field are nominees also for the Oaks, these being Vagrancy, Lotopoise, Mackerel, Red Rosette, Bonnet Ann Copperette, Chiquita Mia and Tribal Ruler. In the event that the entire sixteen face starter George Cassidy, the Acorn will gross $ i5, 150 and will hold a net worth to the winner of 1,450. This sum, it could be added, is considerably more than the actual worth of some of those named. Vagrancy was not expansive in her Belmont Pari? essay subsequent to the Pimlico Oaks. However, she was up against Painted Veil and other capable older mares there and the race should have sharpened her for a mile, dropping back off the longer Baltimore special. Zaca Roses Good Local Form Zaca Rosa has the best local form of the entrants. She is on the extreme outside in the gate ,this afternoon, but comes out of there in high gear and in her qualifier just bounced six furlongs in 1:11, to win by five from such as Smiles, Light Lady, a Keeneland winner and the windy Navy Cruiser. Mackerel appears at the apex of her form and holds plenty of class. She beat little at Jamaica, but won consummately. The Swallow has some speed while Lotopoise and Chiquita Mia are in clever hands. Itll be quite a scramble, one imagines with the luck at the break a factor of unusual importance. Vagrancy has a familiar rider in Malley, while Meade handles Lotopoise, with James on Mackerel, Woolf on Red Rosette, Wright on Bonnet Ann and Haas, as usual on Chiquita Mia. The Acorn heads a strong Wednesday card, one that includes a race of stakes aspects in all but the name in the Ben Brush Handicap, of ,000 added. Cant Wait, Swing and Sway, Moscow n., Boling-broke and Tola Rose will match strides at a mile and a furlong in this extra added attraction. C. V. Whitney and William Woodward, by the way, will be striving for a second victory in the Acorn this afternoon, the former having won. the 1932 running with the celebrated Top Flight and Belair that of 1934 with Fleam.
