4 Louisvilles Charity Meet Opens Today Keeneland and Churchill Offer Full Week of Sport For Benefit of Red Cross LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 22.— The Churchill Downs and Keeneland Associations have with exemplary generosity, designated the ensuing full week of racing at Derbytown as "Charity Week", with the , American Red Cross receiving all.net proceeds from the sport. Judging from public response to Keenelands regular spring meet, which proved the most successful in the young Lexington clubs history, the yield will be substantial. There will be • three stakes fixtures renewed during the , six days and their attractiveness is hopefully expected to more than offset their , moderate endowments. The first of these events is Keenelands ,000 added Lafayette Stakes for two-year-olds at four , and a half furlongs on Tuesday. It will be followed on Wednesday by the 0,000 , added Blue Grass Stakes, which is the mid -Wests most important preliminary for the Kentucky Derby. On Saturday. Churchill Downs offers its ,000 Clark Handicap for three-year-olds and up. The first three of the six dates are contributed by the guest association, the other by Churchill Downs management. The Blue Grass Stakes this spring contains special interest because of the confused Derby issue. It is expected that a filly. Hyman Friedbergs clever Harriet Sue will be the favorite for this run of a mile and a furlong. Wednesdays will be the 20th edition of the Blue Grass, which was inaugurated at the abandoned, century-old Kentucky Association course, Lexington, in 1911. when Governor Gray was the victor over Meridian, who reversed that order in a rather dubious Derby result. Two Blue Grass Derby Doubles Since then several fillies such as Bronze-wing and Regalo have won Blue Grass renewals. Harriet Sues sire, Bull Lea. himself won the 1938 running. Bubbling Over and Shut Out completed the Blue Grass-Kentucky Derby double, in 1926 and 42 respectively. Indications at the writing are that Harriet Sues opposition will come from among Btolites Arkansas Derby victor. Challenge Me. W. C. Davis Rockwood Boy. Erlanger Stables Shut Up, A. C. The most ambitious training move by a Derby eligible this morning was that of Brief Sigh, a recent arrival from Miami who is not, however, among the first flight of the probables. He was clocked a handy jmile in 1:44 on the fast surface that ob-! tained. The local Derby scene will be enlivened during the next several days by the appearance of invaders from Long Island, headed by Pukka Gin and Stir Up. and final tune-ups for the Blue Grass Stakes. I
