J , J , , I 6 Southern Maryland Goes to Sun Again Pensive Also Scores in Calumet Silks as Sollure Captures Harford Honors BALTIMORE, Md., April 22.— In conclusive manner, Calumet Farms Sun Again avenged his earlier Widener defeat by Four Freedoms in trouncing that Green cree Stable representative by two lengths in the tenth running of the ,500 Southern Maryland Handicap at Pimlico today. Only three started and Arthur J. Sacketts Tola Rose, who alternated with Four Freedoms in setting and pressing the early pace, took the third award. The winners share of the endowed purse amounted to ,750. He covered the mile and one-sixteenth in le1 on a track classified as fast, but definitely off the condition it was in when the record of 1:4335 was set for the distance. As expected Sun Again who completed a double for Calumet. Pensive having won earlier, brought about a .40 for .00 mutuel pay-off. Some 18,000 racing enthusiasts turned out for this half-holiday program, highlighted not only by the Southern Maryland but also featuring the Harford Handicap, Third Success in Stake for Bedwell H. Guy Bedwell, whose Sun Egret accounted for the 1939 and 1940 renewals of the Harford Handicap, when contested at I its home pounds, Havre ci Grace, sent Sollure out to take this 31st running. The son of Soleil du Midi — Luress scored without difficulty in front-running style, reaching the finish with three lengths to spare. He was timed the six furlongs in 1:12% and rewarded at .10 as favorite. The accomplishment enriched the Laurel. Md., horseman by ,175. Charles S. Howards Porters Cap tried to come from behind this time, but the attempt fell short and that six-year-old had to be content with second place, two and one-half lengths before the Maryland bred New Moon from the stable of Henry L. Straus. *. With the start of the Southern Maryland, listed fifth, Tola Rose and Four Freedoms sped away in team fashion while Sun Again lagged some six lengths behind. This order continued throughout the first six furlongs, with the leaders duelling buh unable to draw away from one another. In the meantime Sun Again raced under en-forced restraint, evidently Conn McCreary who had the mount, preferring to permit Tola Rose and Four Freedoms to wear one another out. By capturing the Sagamore. Pensive earned the right to still be considered a probable Kentucky Derby starter for Calu- met.
