Loveday Ekes Out Head Win Over Scotch Abbot McMullen Puts Up Strong Ride To Land Mount Home in Front PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 22.— With 25.000 New England racing patrons roaring approval, Loveday scored a game triumph in the ninth running of the ,000 added Roger Williams Handicap at Narragansett Park today. Smartly ridden by George Mc- Mullen, who piloted the Mrs. W. R. Flem- ing mare to victory in the Inaugural Purse on the opening day of the meeting, Loveday reached the finish of the mile and a sixteenth test a head before Merry-Ho Stables 0 Scotch Abbot. Just a half-length farther back, Boot and Spur, who was a part of. W. I. Lunts favored entry, accounted for the minor portion of the purse. Loveday shouldered 108 pounds, which impost was six pounds less than that carried by the top weighted Resolute II. and ran the distance over the fast track in 1:4533. commendable time. Second choice in the speculation, the Fleming mare was good for .20 in the "tote" and her share of the Roger Williams spoils was ,590. Loveday was off rather tardily and McMullen did not call on her for high speed until reaching the final three furlongs. Scotch Abbot had disposed of Mixer at that stage of the running and he entered the stretch with a clear lead, while Boot and Spur was a determined third. The victor began her challenge from fourth position and disposed of Mixer, Boot and Spur, and Scotch Abbot in that order, attaining major honors in the closing strides. j j | j j j j !
