Card Chesapeake at Pimlico Saturday jVision Possibility Of Splitting Stake As Many as Twenty Starters For 5f000 Final Eastern Derby Preview Seems Likely BALTIMORE, Md., April 22 —Racing of a sort to satisfy the most fastidious of turf fans is scheduled for next week at Pimlico, where on Wednesday will be offered the Aberdeen Stakes, for two-year-olds; on Thursday the Gittings Handicap, in which three-year-olds and older will duel; Friday the Spring Maiden and on Saturday Marylands own preview to the Kentucky Derby, the 5,000 added Chesapeake Stakes. This exclusive three-year-old feature has on occasion been the downfall of Derby as well as Preakness Stakes aspirants. In fact, only three past winners of this normal Havre de Grace feature, namely, Whiskery in 1927, Cavalcade in 1934 and the 1937 hero. War Admiral, have gone on to capture the Kentucky classic and, as far as regards the Preakness, only War Admiral succeeded following his Chesapeake score. Todays running of the Wood Memorial at New York means that the Chesapeake becomes the final and most important test for eastern three-year-olds retaining designs on either the Derby or Preakness. Moreover, todays renewal of that event is bound to have considerable influence on the prospective field for next Saturdays presentation here. Probables Listed There is a possibility that so many eligi-bles to the Chesapeake may be named through the entry box that a splitting of the race into two divisions may be necessary. In that event the Maryland Jockey Club, which is managing this combined meeting of the states four major tracks, would hang up a 5,000 prize for each division. At this time there is conjecture of a probable starting field of 15 or 20. These probables include E. K. Brysons Director J. E., Bobanet Stables Gay Bit, Mrs. R. Carruthers Jimmie, William Helis Olympic Zenith, Mrs. E. duPont Weirs Galactic, the W. L. Brann entry of Picotee and Declared, Mrs. A. J. Abels Gramps Image, Joe W. Browns Fox Brownie, Calumet Farms Pensive, Mrs. T. Christophers Bel Reigh, R. Sterling Clarks pair, Smolensko and Bell-the-Cat; A. C. Ernsts Alorter, Philip Godfreys Comenow, Max Hirschs Third Trial, Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Stymie, Lazy F Ranchs Jovine. Max Marmorsteins Black Swan, Mill River Stables Sweeping Time, Wheatley Stables Free Lance and Col. C. V. Whitneys Pukka Gin. The latter, of course, must be considered extremely doubtful. In addition, others not nominated to either the Derby or Preakness can be considered likely starters. They include the prominent Calumet Farm filly team of Miss Keeneland and Twilight Tear. It has been indicated that in spite of eligibility to the Derby, these two will not race in any three-year-old classics. Their efforts will most likely be confined to events limited to fillies, such as the Pimlico Oaks, Acorn and Coaching Club American Oaks. Aberdeen to Draw Unbeaten Timeless Among likely probables noted for their present prominence are Pukka Gin. Olympic Zenith, Stymie, Gay Bit and Director J. E. Pukka Gin was beaten in his first sally, but this has not detracted too much from the colts reputation. Neither, for that matter, was the drubbing Olympic Zenith received by Stymie. Naturally, the latters stock soared following that success. Gay Bit finished an impressive third here in his debut and Director J. E. won in commendable fashion at this course recently. Because of its bearing on the three-year-old situation at this time, the Chesapeake naturally overshadows other offerings during the week. Nevertheless, the Aberdeen has its place, endowed with ,000 and to be decided over four and one-half furlongs. It will no doubt bring together the Bowie Kindergarten winner, Mrs. Colin MacLeods Timeless, and such other two-year-olds as Flying Bridge. Potsey, Up in Time. In the Purple, Lubra, Alexis, Ellis, Don Chance, Piquant, Hoop Jr. and Shako. Most likely a small but select field will answer the call for the ,500 Gittings. at a mile and one-sixteenth, on Thursday. It is presumed Calumet Farm will send post-ward an entry in Mar-Kell and Sun Again, while opposing them will perhaps be Tola Rose, Grey Wing, Chaldon Heath, Famous Victory, Lord Calvert and Alquest. The Spring Maiden on Friday is a three-way succession race, for maiden steeplechase horses, maidens at the time of nomination. Several of the probable entrants have already won at the meeting and there is every reason to believe an interesting contest will evolve.
