Nineteen Riders Already On Hand at Sportsmans Many More Expected Before Meeting Opens on Saturday That Sportsmans Park will have a full | coterie of riders for its 14-day meeting, I I which ushers in the long Illinois season of j j 163 days next Saturday, is seen from a I check of reinsmen already on the grounds at the National Jockey Club course. No less than 19, many of them regulars at the half-mile track for several years, have reported to Vascoe Parke, new custodian of the jockey quarters. As an inducement to have the best avail- , able riding talent on hand for its meeting, j officials of the track recently announced i | prizes of ,650 in War Bonds would be1 l awarded the four leading riders at the ses- i ! sion. j Among the veterans on the grounds are Willie Lowe: Eddie Franklin. Anthony j i LoTurco, Willie Lang, Marcus Pena, T. P. J | Martin, Tommy Haley, R. Haber, W. War- ren, D. Jessop, W. Gillespie, P. Lavoie, Bruno Pucci, J. W. Martin and M. Terry. j Three apprentices also are on hand, they j being Sylvester Haynes, C. Klinder and Darrell Williams. The latter has yet to make his saddle debut, but has been galloping horses for some time and expects to have his first mount before the meeting is long under way. Wegrzyn is a local boy. having been born here in Chicago. His ability as a rider was | I I j j I amply demonstrated during the Hawthorne meeting last fall as well as at the session here. Wegrzyn has ridden 35 winners thus far this season, his second in the saddle, having scored with 29 of his mounts at the Fair Grounds and six during his stay at Oaklawn. He rode his first winner during the Lincoln Fields meeting at Hawthorne on May 27 of last year. With several days remaining before the curtain rises on the sport here, as many as a score of other riders are expected to put in an appearance, several coming from Kentucky, Florida and other racing centers.
