Expect Phidias to Rule Yankee Handicap Choice Earned Ranking Through Score In Constitution on Week-End SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 3.— The victory of William G. Helis Phidias in the eleventh running of the 0,000 Constitution Handicap, one mile test for three-year-olds on Saturday has installed the chestnut son of Rosemont-Shell Hole as the pre-race favorite for the 5,000 Yankee Handicap, one mile and three-sixteenths feature of the week-end card here on next Saturday. Phidias was much the best of his field in the Constitution. The Helis colt, who was accounting for the fourth score of his career, and his first victory in a stakes event, was timed in 1:38% over a track that had been dulled somewhat by the rains and he was going as he pleased at the end. "I dont think he is a great colt," said trainer Kearns when asked to comment about his charge, "but I do think that he is a good one." Phidias, who was bred by A. A. Baldwin, was purchased by Helis for ,500 as a yearling. He graduated in the only victory of his juvenile season in a maiden race last August at Garden State Park, in New Jersey. Prior to being shipped up here for his stakes engagements, Phidias won two allowance events in New York, both scores being impressive enough as he won by seven lengths on a fast track at Jamaica and his next victory was scored over a slow racing strip at the same track with four lengths to spare. The colts achievement will be of interest to those New England racing fans who recall the victory of his daddy, then racing r for William duPonts Foxcatcher Farm : stable, scored in the 1936 renewal of the 5,000 Narragansett Special. That particular renewal of the Rhode Island feature ■ was highlighted by a thrilling stretch 1 duel between Rosemont and Discovery r with Time Supply, winner of the Massachusetts - Handicap here the same year, also an important factor in the final result.
