"Gus" Gay, Kentucky racing commissioner and breeder, will offer a Bull Lea colt and filly at the Keeneland sales, and they probably will be among the most sought-after yearlings of the season. . . . Max Hirsch tells us he has no definite plans for Assault, but the 0,000 Dwyer, on June 15, should be a magnet. . . . The letterhead of the new Atlantic City Racing Association will carry the statement, "Your Horses Are Safe in Our Fireproof Barns.". . . . Leslie Combs II., president of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners, and Harry Par III., president of the TRA, had a few "private hudrles" in recent days. . . . When Mayor O Dwyer entered the winners circle after the Belmont, one wag said, "Oh, - h, Ill bet hes going to put the bite on Kleberg for part of the stake money." Winning the "Triple Crown" is probably but the first of the honors that will go to King Ranchs Assault this season. Back in 1930 Gallant Fox started 10 times as a three-year-old to win 08,275, the largest sum ever won by one horse in one season anywhere in the world. It is a foregone conclusion that Assault will break that record this season, for to date he has earned 99,020, needing only ,256 to top Gallant Fox record. At the moment, Assault is the winner of 16,270, placing him twelfth on the list of money-winning horses of the world. He needs only 1,896 to pass Gallant Fox, who is now in tenth position, and, should he start and win the Dwyer, which will be run on June 15, he will pass Shut Out, Gallant Fox, Phar Lap, Busher, Challedon, Equipoise and Alsab, to become the fifth largest money-winning horse in world history. Only two horses — Whirlaway and Seabiscuit — have earned over 00,000 luring their racing careers, but there is a very good chance that Assault will join them before the 1946 season comes to a close, as Max Hirsch has his choice of many rich races that will be run between now and the month of November. It is well within the realm of possibility that Armed, as well as Assault, may pass the 08,275 mark this season. When 1946 came over the hill Armed had 6,450 to his credit. He made his first start of the 1946 season on January 26 at Hialeah. In his first 10 starts of the year he increased his earnings by 31,-350. Then, from Pimlico, he came to New York to win 3,000 by defeating Reply Paid, Stymie and eight others in the Suburban Handicap. His total earnings for the season to date is 74,-350. This leaves him 33,925 to win before he equals Gallant Fox record. That is a tidy sum, but it must be remembered that the great Calumet gelding has many rich events to shoot at in the older ranks, just as Assault has among the three-year-olds. There are four 0,000 races at Arlington and Washington Parks in Chicago, and Armed is eligible for all of them. While he could be beaten, due to the poundage the handicappers will put upon him, it does not look as if there is an older horse in the country today who can win from him if the weights are comparable. Like Assault, it appears as if he will climb over many horses on the worlds money-winning ladder in the months to come. Lord Boswell was the big disappointment of the Belmont Stakes. The throng made him favorite over Assault, but the manner in whic he flattened out when the drive came left his admirers speechless. There was one ray of sunshine for the Maine Chance Farm contingent, and that was the manner in which Jet Pilot won from Peace Harbor, Noble Creek and seven others in the National Stallion Stake; . This 1,000 colt by Blenheim II.— Black Wave, by Sir Gallahad III., has been undefeated in his three starts to date. He was pounds best in the National Stallion and will /ear close watching in the Tremont, which wiU be run at Aqueduct on June 12, and also the Great American, which is scheduled for June 19. The National Stallion was at five furlongs, and we are of the opinion that he will show to even better advantage in the six-furlong Great American. It was indeed fortunate that this colt was not in the barn when the terrible fire practically wiped out the two-year-old group owned by Mrs. Graham. Before the season is out it could be proved that the best colt in the group was spared the fate of his stablemates. Slightly over 100,000 people witnessed this years renewal of the Kentucky Derby, but at least 500,000 are expected to attend Wednesdays 163rd running of the Epsom Derby in England. Since 1941 the race has been run at Newmarket, but despite the fact that the grandstand is still in somewhat of a demolished condition due to bombing, it will be back at its home track tomorrow. The mile and one-half track at Newmarket is not nearly as tough as the up-hill-down-dale course at Epsom. At the latest call-over, Sir William Cookes colt Hppy Knight, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, has been made the strong favorite and is certain to go to the post at a very short price. Edward Tudor, who finished fourth to Happy Knight in the Two Thousand Guineas, L quoted at 10 to 1 and will have a strong following at that price. According to reports from the other side, White Jacket is another horse who mV have many backers, at 100 to 8. English breeders are watching this renewal with great interest, as is is only natural that the country is far short of its normal quota of high-class stallions.
