Skokie, Skokie, Pollyanna Pollyanna Attract Attract Top Top Fields; Fields; Seven Seven Named Named for for Empire Empire City City Stakes Stakes Spy Song, Pep Well, Fourteen Others Vie at Seven Furlongs JOHN McSHANE Navy Cross carried his colors to victory in the Sarazen Purse yesterday at Arlington Park. Twenty-One Juvenile Fillies Slated to Oppose Miss Kimo In Rich Arlington Fixture ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 28. Two more in the splendid array of stakes offered during the combined Arlmgton-Washington meetings will un-doubtly attract another banner crowd of better than 30,000 turfites to Arlington Park tomorrow to witness some of the smartest three-year-olds in training clash in the 5,000 Skokie Handicap, while the 5,000 Pollyanna Stakes will bring out a tremendous field ot 22 juvenile fillies. Because of the appearance of Dixianas fashionable Spy Song and other top-notchers in the Skokie, the seven-furlong test, which is designed as a prep for the 0,000 Arlington Classic Stakes, although the latter has attracted, with few exceptions, the cream of the two-year-old fillies. Spy Song, with a dead aim on the Classic Stakes and another meeting against King Ranchs vaunted Assault, arrives at another cross road of his career in the Skokie. He has been beset by tribulations since he injured himself as a two-year-old and was forced to remain on the sidelines until he was brought back to the training track with the Kentucky Derby in view. He failed in his mission at the Churchill Downs track! when Assault ran away from him in the stretch, and it was then that his trainer, Jack Hodgins, decided to freshen him up and point him for the important stakes of Arlington and Washington. Worked Six Furlongs in 1:10 Flat His return to competition here last week was impressive enough when he easily scored overa field of second-rate sophomores, but what "sold" local horsemen on him more than his winning performance, was his brilliant workout several days before. The colt, who is a picture of the perfectly molded horse, dashed over the six furlongs route in his training jaunt in 1:10. No horse during the current meeting has been able to remotely approach that figure in actual competition. The fact that local dockers and horsemen who timed the move said he probably could have gon faster had he been urged, stamped the Dixiana flash as one of the fastest horses of many years. Spy Song, however, has something of a Jekyl and Hyde complex. In a few seconds he is quite capable of transforming from a smooth, easy-to-handle speedster into a rank rogue who refuses to extend himself. When he faces the barrier in the Skokie, his backers will hardly be concerned with his ability to outrun his rivals. They seem to know conclusively he can turn that trick. They will be quite apprehensive though about his conduct during the running whether he becomes rank and sulks like he did once before in the Derby Trial. The Calumet Farms Pep Well and Maine Chance Farms Perfect Bahram are regarded as the logical contenders against Spy Song in the 16-horse field. Pep Well carries with him a record that on paper looks mighty impressive. He has captured his last five races and most of them he won in galloping style. His class of competition, however, wasnt of top-notch variety and it will be interesting to note his effort against the kind who will clash in the Skokie. Perfect Bahram has survived a tough campaign since he was placed in hard training for the Derby in good style. He did not start as a two-year-old but won his first two starts this season. He failed utterly against Assault in the Derby and was later beaten in a" pair of races at Belmont Continued on Page Three Skokie and Pollyanna Bring Out Top Fields Spy Song, Pep Well and Fourteen Others Vie Former at Arlington Continued from Page One Park. But he bounced back nicely recently in a race at Aqueduct with a smashing victory. Others well prepped for the Skokie and among the entries are Frank Frankels Blunt Remark and Hadrian, Bomar Stables Billy Bumps, William Helis Rippey, Miss Gertrude Donovans Fighting Frank, Brolite Farms With Pleasure, L. B. Combs Dark Jungle, Mrs. A. M. Creechs Cid Play, Brown Hotel Stables Buzzaround, Mrs. Al Gaals The Dude, Bobonet Stables Marine Victory, Hal Price Headleys Pellicle, and Augustus and Nahms Eternal Reward. The Pollyanna, carded at five and one-half furlongs, may be split into two divisions if all 22 fillies start. This, however, is hardly likely for a large number of scratches are expected tomorrow morning. The large starting gate holds 14, while an auxiliary gate, holding four, would make it possible to start 18 horses. The leader of the unwieldy field shapes up as William Helis Miss Kimo, a lassie who began her preliminary racing education at the Fair Grounds at New Orleans during the winter and who later displayed grand speed in her stakes engagements in New York. She has started six times this year and but for an Indian sign held over her by Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitneys sprightly First Flight, she has beaten all other rivals. First Flight whipped her in a pair of stakes at Belmont and Aqueduct. She finished second on those occasions, and in four other starts she was returned victorious. These feats appear to make her a standout on the record, but there are many promising prospects in the race who may make the Pollyanna a stepping stone to greater things in the future. The work tab indicates Dainty Red will show a good turn of speed, for the lassie, who is owned by William Veeneman, stepped five furlongs in :59 as her final important prep for the sprint. Others who have large follow-ings are Maine Chance Farms War Fan, Bobanet Stables Lovely Imp, Mrs. Albert Sabaths Say Blue, A. B. Hancock, Jr.s Blue Grass, and J. A. Goodwins Ballarita. Completing the field will be Casa Camara, Liteco, Ginnys Pride, Clothes Horse, Miss Mood, Doggin It, Gracie Vee, Jeannie Pie, Caique, Stones Throw, Chance Bea, Springtide, Wilt Thou, Parklyn and Dancing Margot.
