Skokie, Skokie, Pollyanna Pollyanna Attract Attract Top Top Fields; Fields; Seven Seven Named Named for for Empire Empire City City Stakes Stakes Windfields to Meet Natchez at Route Post of Favoritism Between Pair; Entry of Bonnie Beryl Surprise in 0,000 Event JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., June 28. Seven capable, if not brilliant three-year-olds, have, been named to go postward tomorrow in the thirty-eighth running of the 0,000 Empire City Stakes. The withdrawal of King Ranchs Assault, who had been kept on edge for the race, was announced two days ago by trainer Max Hirsch, so it was no great surprise to find the champion conspicuous by his absence. In his place are two horses who chased him home in his last two starts and who will probably vie both for favoritism and for the major share of the added money tomorrow. These are Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez, who finished second in the Belmont, and E. P. Taylors Windfields, who was a rather remote second in the Dwyer Stakes. Netchez will carry top weight of 121 pounds tomorrow, conceding five to Windfields. That may be quite a job as the Canadian-bred son of Bunty Lawless had won three straight in rather impressive style before succumbing to the "Triple Crown" winner in the Dwyer. Be Courageous Bradley Hopeful The others in the Empire City are River Edge Farms Salerno, Col. E. R. Bradleys Be Courageous, John B. Thealls Islam Prince and Greentree Stables Midnight Oil, 116 each, and Belair Studs filly, Bonnie Beryl, 111. The presence of the last named miss in the overnight line-up is a mild surprise, though her possibility as a starter had been conjectured trainer Jim Fitzsimmons may be encouraged by the fact that a filly, Gallorette, won last years renewal in a thrilling duel from Wildlife. It is doubtful if Bonnie Beryl is quite in a class with the Brann filly, though she was good enough to win. the Delaware Oaks this year, but there may also be some doubt of the class of the males .vho will oppose her tomorrow. On paper, this edition of the Empire City shapes up as a two-horse race between Windfields and Natchez and with those two its a case of "you bet your money and you take your choice." On a line through Assault they figure very close together. Windfields, however has more recent form to recommend him. Natchez raced brilliantly at Delaware Park following his second in the Belmont, then was in and out of the Dwyer, He was expected to run in last Saturdays Diamond State Stakes at the Stanton oval, but the Jeffords colors were represented by Mahout, who was made favorite and couldnt get the job done. Herb Lindberg, who has been riding Continued on Page Three Empire City Stakes To Bring Out Seven Windfields and Natchez Top Field for 0,000 Fixture; Bonnie Beryl in Line-Up Continued from Page One Windfields in the mornings, is slated to be in the saddle tomorrow. No rider has been assigned Natchez at this writing. Of the others, Be Courageous stopped to a walk and finished last in the Dwyer, after setting the pace for more than a mile. He had won like a fair sort of colt before that, but there is no obvious reason why he should beat Windields tomorrow. Islam Prince showed a liking for this track in the spring in finishing well in a couple of races slightly shorter than tomorrows mile and three-sixteenths. Midnight Oil was scratched from a Class "D" race today to run in tomorrows stake, which indicates either that he is considerably better than racing secretary John Campbell rates him, or that trainer John Gaver and the Greentree board of strategy has a poor opinion of the, others in the Empire City. Salerno Won Last Salerno won his last start here, but required 1:45 to beat the mediocre Chance Thread at a mile and a sixteenth. He hardly seems a worthy replacement for Assault, but trainer Max Hirsch usually knows exactly what he is doing. Warren Mehrtens, Assaults pilot will ride Salerno. Bonnie Beryl has as much speed as any of the colts and occasionally has been able to carry it a reasonable distance. She gets in here with only 111 pounds and if a clever pilot can be found, the daughter of Fighting Fox Bonnie Maginn may be troublesome. No rider has been assigned as yet.
