Detroits Turf Handicap Offered in Two Divisions Many Lands, Sir Sprite Carry Topweights in Respective Ends FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 28. When the 0,000 Turf Handicap attracted 18 of the best horses quartered here, racing secretary Charles F. Henry divided the feature into two sections to make one of the best week-end programs offered at the meeting. The twin headliners, which will be decided over the popular Lewis turf course of about one mile, each carry the prize value of 0,000 and the drawings of the entrants brought about the assurance of keen competition in each end of the race. Patrons here are very fond of races over the turf course and they will witness still another contest ov6r the grass when a limit field of 10 meets in the fifth race. For the first time in several seasons a race will oe offered over the mile and three-sixteenths distance when the field for the first race is sent postward. A six furlongs dash for horses ridden by novice riders is third on the card to add interest to the attractive program. In the first division of the Turf Handicap which is offered as the sixth race, Al Well-mans Many Lands is topweighted under 119 pounds. The son of Discovery was a galloping winner of the Hendrie Handicap at last asking and drove to victory in the Cadillac Handicap in his previous outing. Both of these successes were at six furlongs but Wellmans ace should be able to carry his speed over the additional distance here. Mrs. G. C. Whites Diamond Dick, under Continued on Page Three Run 0,000 Turf Handicap In Two Sections at Detroit Continued from Page One 114 pounds, is certain to come in for stout support on the strength of his creditable third in the mile and a sixteenth Motor City Handicap in which he set most of the pa.-e. Earlier in the meeting he accounted for the six furlongs Border City Handicap at the direct expense of Many Lands and the intermediate distance of the Turf Handicap should be in his favor. Anthony Graf-fagninis Rip Away under 116 pounds and Herman Josepharts obviously fit Increscent with 100 rate serious consideration. O. F. Woodwards doughty Sir Sprite under 126 pounds carries top impost in the second division of the Turf. The fast, finishing son of Ariel accounted for the Motor City Handicap, the Black Gold Purse and the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap, all at one mile and a sixteenth, in his three most recent outings. W. L. Huntleys Umpydan picks up six pounds to 116 over his corking front running victory in the Cross Country Handicap over the Lewis Course. His known fondness for the grass footing earns him respect and he will have the services of the veteran jockey J. R. Layton. Dave Fergusons Ariel Ace has been somewhat of a disappointment and his best races have bnen sprints but his class might serve to earn him some part of this purse. S. Chris Florizan Sam, obviously fit just now, should not be far away.
