Restrict Weight Spread to Twenty Pounds in Handicaps at Arlington Move Aimed to Keep High Imposts Off Name1 Horses, Discourage Unwieldy Fields ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 28. In one of the most revolutionary moves in the history of the American turf, Benjamin F. Lindheimer, executive director of Arlington Park and Washington Park, today announced that in all future handicaps run at this meeting the gap between the highest and lowest weighted horses will, under no circumstances, save filly and mare scale "allowances, be more than 20 pounds. Designed to keep crushing imposts off outstanding handicap horses and at the same time to discourage lesser lights cluttering up fields solely because of low weight assignments, the revolutionary decree was issued in the following statement: Policy Stated "Weights for handicaps during the balance of the Arlington Park meeting will be limited to a 20-pound spread on the weight-for-age scale, according to an announcement today by Benjamin F. Lindheimer, executive director of the Arlington Park Jockey Club. After consulting with the handicap board of Arlington Park, Mr. Lindheimer issued the following statement setting forth the policy of assigning weights at the track for the remainder of the handicap program: "The past five-year period has seen a great increase in the number and value of stake and handicap races throughout the country. As a result thereof, there has been considerable discussion as to the practicability of establishing high and minimum weights in the valuable and important handicap races offered today. After several conferences with the handicap board of Arlington Park, it is our opinion and judgment that the following policy be pursued in handicap races in the hope that it will bring about an improvement of handicapping practices in the interest of all concerned in racing. "The maximum weights in all handicaps, up and including one mile, will be 132 APPRENTICE H. KEENE Starred in the saddle yesterday at Suffolk Downs with five winning mounts. pounds; minimum weight, 100 pounds. Maximum weights in all handicap over one mile, 130 pounds; minimum weights, 100 pounds. In no handicap race shall the high weighted horse, according to the present scale of weights, exceed the weight carried by another horse by more than 20 pounds. Fillies and mares may be given scale sex allowance."
