. Sigma Kappa Wins At Mile of Brevity Bax Mare Sets All of Pace To Lead Hail Victory Home; Navy Cross Takes Sarazen ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights. Ill June 28. Bernard J. Baxs good mare, Sigma Kappa, a sprightly campaigner who has been finishing right on the heels i of the top sprinters to race here here this season, reversed the tables on her rivals in the Brevity Purse, which featured todays program and, flashing grand speed throughout the journey, she came home on the chinstrap by three and one-hall lengths. The Calumet Farms Hail Victory showed performance, but wasnt good a game enough to match the winner. However, he outgamed HarPrice Headleys Letmenow in the fight for the place, while L. Tikul-skis Bobs Pick took down the consolation fourth prize. Opens Up Clear Lead Sigma Kappa, a five-year-old chestnut daughter of Emileo Grania, showed one of the finest efforts of the meeting from a time standpoint when she strutted over the one mile journey from out of the chute in 1:36, which was easily the fastest similar trip of the meeting, much faster, than Witch Sir could as a matter of fact, record when he beat Old Kentuck and Armed in the Equipoise Mile. Time, however, can hardly be used as a good gauge for class at this track this season, for, according to horsemen and "speed chart specialists, it has been showing a tendency to vary greatly from one day to another even under the best of conditions. Well ridden by Steve Brooks, Sigma Kappa lost little time in opening a clear lead on her rivals. Gueydan and Juke Box were first out of the gate, but the former quickly dropped out of contention, while Juke Box went out to force the winner s pace. Letmenow, who was favorite m the Continued on Page Three . i Sigma Kappa Never Headed In Brevity at Arlington Continued from Page One wagering, drove up on the inside, and when Juke Box showed signs of tiring, she moved into the second spot, made several attempts to get to the leader, and then dropped back when Hail Victory was the next to take a pot shot at Sigma Kappa. The Calumet racer for a few seconds appeared capable of overhauling the Bax speedster, but when Brooks reahced back and shook up the mare with his whip, she drew away and during the last eighth of a mile the star reinsman just flicked his whip in front of Sigma Kappas eyes to let her know it wasnt time to call it a day. Johnny McShanes Navy Cross, with Doug Dodson registering a double for the afternoon, outgamed Jule Finks Alison Peters in a hard drive during the running of the secondary feature, known as the Sarazen Purse. At the finish the leaders were necks apart, while the heavily backed favorite, Trojan Fleet, from the Bobanet Stable, was a disappointing third. Navy Cross was a running horse all the way, for he opened up a couple of lengths on the backstretch, continued to maintain a good margin around the turn and, when Dodson settled down to a drive in the stretch, he held on with fine courage to withstand Alison Peters closing bid. Trojan Fleet, who failed to show his usual early foot, slipped through on the rail on the turn, saved abundant ground, got within threatening distance, then flattened out.
