Ridden by Billy Floyd, the winner overtook Mrs. Valenti, who races for her namesake, Mrs. Catherine Valenti of New Orleans, in the late stretch. One length farther back May Fly was a fast-finishing third for W. H. Bishop as the Sweep All filly led in the favored Holly-man from the stable of Mrs. G. H. Emick. The early pacemaker, Princess Rena, who represented the partnership of Fuller and Goldblatt, was before the only other starter, Ben Fogelsons Pomps Gal. Leavenworth was sent over the six furlongs in 1:13% over a slow track and paid 2.80. Cloudy weather again greeted a crowd of 10,404 and the track had no chance to regain perfect condition following frequent and intermittent overnight rain. Mrs. Valenti Replaces Princess Rena Princess Rena was first of the half dozen in the Marica to show in front after a perfect start, and the daughter of Port au Prince had speed to open up a clear lead as she raced before Mrs. Valenti with Leavenworth next in line and not far away. Princess Rena was done when headed and wilted into the discard as Mrs. Valenti moved into a clear advantage in the stretch. Here a new threat to her supremacy loomed as Leavenworth was asked for his best. The Woolford Farm representative responded gamely to pressure, but his response was gradual and he was only able to inch to Mrs. Valenti, who put up a stubborn battle before surrendering. May Fly had raced in fourth place and was taken to the outside for the drive. Finishing stoutly, she was able to hold Hollyman safe for third honors. Hollyman, as usual, lacked early speed and trailed the other favorite to the stretch turn, where he usually makes a speedy finish. Today, however, while making up some ground, he lacked his usual Continued on Page Seven Lincoln Fields Marica Purse Is Taken by Leavenworth Continved from Page One closing lick and was not a serious threat to the first three. For the second time during the four days of racing at this point, jockey Tommy Bates rode the winners of both ends of the Daily Double, which was worth 5.40. The opening race went to Mrs. E. D. Ewarts Shasta Man, who was steadied within reach of the early leaders and took command rather handily in the stretch to lead in Pari-Joe with third going to Wobble Pump. Mrs. C. E. Khamseens Boy and Sons Style, both finishing stoutly, came to the finish line on equal terms, but they were not able to threaten the winner.
