Thorncliffe Park Agrees ! To HBPA Purse Demand ; Adopts ,350 Minimum Figure; Dufferin Park Also Accedes i TORONTO, Ont., May 14.— The Thorn- J cliffe Park Racing and Breeding Associa- s tion has acceded to the demand of the ] Horsemens Benevolent and Protective As- 1 sociation Canadian division for a mini- 1 mum purse of ,350. The following state- I ment was issued this afternoon: "Thorncliffe will adopt ,350 as its minimum I purse for the spring meeting, and in the I future will necessarily be guided by re- • suits." Members of the Canadian division HBPA at a meeting on Tuesday rejected pro- posals advanced by its committee of three who met with officials of Thorncliffe and Long Branch race tracks that a minimum purse of ,250 be accepted with a promise ; of increased minimum at autumn meetings if business warranted. Fred H. Orpen, of Dufferin Park and Long Branch, had accepted the ,3au minimum for the Dufferin Park meetings, but would not agree to pay the same minimum purse at Long Branch race track, offering the counter-proposal. Several resolutions were offered the horsemen on other than the ,350 minimum, all of which were uniformly rejected until the original resolution calling for ,350 was approved by a larpr iv,~ A member of the committee, in suggesting that a minimum of ,k,oj . „_u for Long Branch, pointed out that Orpen had provided winter quarters for many horsemen and operated a restaurant for their convenience. He further stated that this practice might be discontinued if horsemen were unwilling to accept the Orpen offer. W. E. Macdonald, legal adviser of the HBPA, replied, declaring that any sucn considerations need not be taken seriously since, in the event of such action, the association were quite able to secure suitable i winter quarters with a training track, which would provide ample accommodations ! at moderate rental fees. May 20 had been set as the deadline to hear from the Thorncliffe and Long ■ Branch officials on acceptance of the minimum , and, in the event of unfavorable i decisions, a drastic action meeting would I be called on Friday, May 23.
