The winner was handled by Al Snider, who, for the second successive day, was registering a riding double. Approximately 9,000 fans witnessed the mid-week program and the throng was introduced to the vagaries of Marylands spring weather. Before noon, it was hot and muggy, with the temperature rising to 80 degrees. A brief, but intense thunderstorm drenched the course shortly before post time, and as the afternoon wore on the mercury fell steadily, prompting those fans who were fortunate to hjing along topcoats, to don this raiment post-haste. The track, officially listed as sloppy for the feature, forced the withdrawal from the overnight field of Mrs. Robert H. Heighss Zax, leaving only four starters. As a result there was straight and place wagering only. Lord Grillo was an odds-on choice and paid .40, and completed the one mile and a sixteenth in 1:46%. Registering his first victory of the spring, the Argentine-bred Lord Grillo was never seriously threatened as he reached the judges two lengths before W. Y. Golds-boroughs Lord Calvert, who was an additional four lengths clear of Paradise Farms Dog OSullivan. Mrs. A. Green-bergs Lombock was a hopelessly beaten last, finishing seven more lengths behind the Paradise Farm colorbearer. Arthur B. Hancocks promising homebred filly, With Honor, was a pronounced favorite to defeat four ordinary rivals of her own age and sex in the secondary Merry Maiden Purse, and the royally-bred dark bay daughter of Rhodes Scholar-Lost Horizon, ran to expectations to reward her multitude of supporters with a .60 pay-off.
