Narragansett Committee Meets to Allot Stabling Nominations to Six Stakes Close Today at Midnight NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., May 14.— With the return of judge James E. Dooley from Kentucky, the committee charged with the responsibility of allotting stalls for the coming summer meeting at Narragansett Park, June 2 to July 5, met Monday to make final decisions. With only 1,100 stalls to distribute among the more than 3,000 horses that have been applied for, the task this year is more difficult than ever before. Stall applications have always been very carefully screened, taking into consideration the quality and current fitness of horses and the reputation and standing of their owners, trainers and connections. All things being equal, preference is given to a group that, over a dozen years, earned the title of "New England regulars." But today, even this group has reached unwieldly proportions, with more and more New Englanders having been attracted to the sport and naturally preferring to fly their silks on the home tracks. Trainers who used to come in with three or four head now have under their care stables that run into double figures. From a sporting point of view this is all to the good, it is splendid testimony to the growth of interest in racing, but it has provided something more than a problem for stall committees. However, by eliminating all unfit horses and by sharply trimming out the cheaper kind, the committee will do its level best to satisfy the applicants. Stall cards will be mailed out later in the week and the stables will be ready to receive horses, but horsemen are warned not to arrive without the necessary credentials, nor to bring more horses than have been officially accepted — this in fairness to other horsemen equally anxious to race here. Narragansett stakes, six 0,000 events and one 5,000 three -year-old race, will close Thursday midnight, May 15. Racing secretary Ty Shea will be at the New York tracks to accept nominations. Publicity director Billy Ames will cover the New nominations must bear a postmark dated not later than midnight, May 15.
