King Bay Furnishes Peabody Memorial Upset While Defeating Star Reward Bax Colt Sets All of Pace t As Odds-On Choice Closes Strong After Slow Start HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 30. King Bay, a son of King Cole and Tacky Sue, scored a stunning upset here today when he carried Bernard J. Bax silks to victory in the nineteenth running of the 5,000 Franciss. Peabody Memorial Handicap. Superbly handled by Jess Higley, the Louisville-owned winner sped to the finish of the one mile and one-sixteenth three-year-old stake three and one-half lengths before Dixianas highly favored Star Reward. Ten lengths back, Virden and Scotts Siddons ran third, a nose in advance of Murlogg Farms Balheim, who bested William M. Peaveys Jett-Jett by three-quarters of a length for fourth money. Shouldering equal top weight of 121 pounds with his four rivals, King Bay raced the Peabody distance over the slow track in 1:50. One of the outsiders in the Memorial Day feature, King Bay paid 7.40 as the third choice. King Bay, who triumphed in two sprint events and then was soundly beaten in the Preakness Stakes renewal this year, picked up 7,475 for his. triumph today, that figure representing the winners portion of the Peabody spoils. Unfortunately, the Peabody start was delayed, seven minutes, Jett-Jett broke Continued on Page Thirty-Four King Bay Whips Star Reward In Peabody Memorial Upset Continued from Page One through the stalls and ran off a fast sixteenth of a mile before the start. When the break was effected, King Bay immediately took command and Star Reward, who is a notoriously bad post horse, literally walked out of the stalls. King Bay then established a clear lead over Siddons, while Jett-Jett occupied third position and Star Reward saved ground while running last in the small field. King Bay seemed to have plenty left when he passed the half-mile marker with his three-length advantage, and once out of the upper turn, Higley sharply roused his mount. Star Reward began a menacing bid near the three-furlong pole and the favorite was within two and one-half lengths of King Bay entering the stretch. In the meanwhile, Siddons and Jett-Jett had enough and were dropping back while Balheim, who had been I far back throughout, could not better his position. During the run to the wire, King Bay continued resolutely under Higleys good hand ride, and Star Reward was unable to cut the victors margin down. The Dixiana colt swerved repeatedly during the last eighth mile, but he was an easy second over the very weary Siddons, who just lasted to save the show award from Balheim. Despite threatening weather and a chill wind, an active throng of 33,668 racing patrons witnessed the sport today at the West Side course. An occasional ray of sunshine added some comfort for those in the big assemblage, but mid-west temperatures still remained far below normal. Unfortunately, the track was not at its best and rated slow for the holiday program. B. M. Smiths useful Cooling Spring, aged son of Milkman and Afloat, proved best of the seven middle distance performers in the one mile and one-sixteenth Lady Broadcast Purse, chief supporting event on the card.
