Fillies and Mares In Seashore Event Mermaid Handicap Draws Burgoo Maid, Ariel Song And Eleven Others to Post ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., May 30. A representative field of 13 fillies and mares- were entered overnight for tomorrows six-furlong Mermaid Handicap, which will feature the first week-end pro-.gram at this seashore course. Slated to match strides for the 0,000 purse are top-notch campaigners from the New York, Maryland and Kentucky sectors. Heading the large and rather well-matched field are Miss Ruth Sfdells Burgoo Maid and Bobanet Stables Ariel Song, who were best regarded by racing secretary Charles McLennan, each having been assigned 116 pounds. Burgoo Maid, a seven-year-old daughter of Burgoo King Miss Kid, was a good winner in Florida the past season and performed creditably during the Kentucky spring campaign although fail-ingHo earn brackets. Burgoo Maid has been on the grounds for the past fortnight and has become thoroughly acclimated. The competent Willie Balzaretti has been listed as her overnight rider and the combination is expected to be held in high esteem by the week-end throng. Ariel Song, trained by the capable Al "Spec" Dunne, dropped a heart-breaking decision to the steady going sprinter Black Gang, in her last start at Havre de Grace, but prior to that entered the winners circle on three occasions this spring. The fleet chestnut daughter of Ariel, embodies a world of early speed and has the necessary equipment to take the track at the break and hold sway thereafter. Keynote to Have Following Likely to vie with Burgoo Maid and Ariel Song for chief support are Brookmeade Stables equally impressive grey filly Keynote. These two top ranking members of the filly-and-mare division were shipped in from New York especially for the week-end fixture and are certain to enjoy respectable support. Music, with the fine little pilot Job Dean Jessop representing the main portion of her 113-pound impost, has been lightly .campaigned this year, starting only three times. Trainer Pres Burch has freshened up the daughter of Good Goods Swing Time since her last start in April and her morning trials at Belmont Park indicate she is rapidly approaching the form she held while registering five victories during the 1946 season. Keynote was a double stakes winner during the 1946 campaign, capturing the As-tarita and Autumn Day Stakes. In the last named she defeated, among other, the clever Jersey-bred filly Pipette. Although Keynote finished unplaced in the Belmont Parks recent Ballot Handicap, she turned in a game effort before striking her colors to formidable colt rivals. Keynote will be ridden by the handy. Canadian reinsman Hedley Woodhouse, and appears very comfortably rigged under 109 pounds. While the four named above appear to hold the best chances in the Mermaid, there are several other members of the overnight field who are more than capable of -providing an upset. In this category are Henry S. Horkheimers Tonys Find, a smart winner of her last race at Havre de Grace; Mrs. Alfred Roberts Jacatam, who scored impressively over a good field here on Tuesday, and Joseph J. Kelleys Chancegain, who has been working well for the engagement. There is one coupling in the Mermaid field, with the promising filly Edified slated to run as an entry with Jacatam. The remaining members of the group comprise Win-Sue Stables Sweeteena, S. H. Rogers Ginargie, Mrs. E. L. Hopkins Carmel Town, and Miss Constance Mora-bitos Music Lesson. Three Mermaid candidates were on the training track for short blowouts this morning. Music and First Page went three-eighths over the muddy track in :36 and :35, respectively, while Carmel Town went a half mile in :48.
