Ted Atkinson Passes 1,500-Mark in Winners BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., May 30. Ted Atkinson, who rode the first two winners at Belmont Park today, was racking lip the 1,500th triumph of his illustrious career when he brought Greentree Stables Humaya up in the final strides of the second race to beat Romancer and the favored Royal Lover. The Toronto-born jockey rode his, first mount on December 2, 1937, which means that he has averaged well over 150 winners a year since first climbing in the saddle. Atkinsons first winning mount was on H. C. Rumages Musical Jack at Beulah Park, Grove City, Ohio, in May of 1938. Though he is generally regarded a , Brooklyn boy, Atkinson actually passed most of his formative years after leaving Canada at the age of four in upstate New York, and only lived in Brooklyn for a short time before "going with the horses." A natural lightweight, the veteran can make 104 pounds on two days notice, as he did a few days ago.
