Vesuvius Takes Measure Of Favored Dutchill B. Extends Streak to Three With Length Victory in Route Test FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 30. Vesuvius, under the silks of Arthur J. Halliwell, of Toronto, Ont., and ridden by Jimmy Reynolds, ran his score of consecutive triumphs to three when he drove to a one-length victory in the fourth race, a test at one mile and a sixteenth that saw a field of seven face the starter. The winner drove through between horses in the early stretch to draw clear and maintain his advantage to the end, and it was W. J. Susinis favored Dutchill B. who was second. Two additional lengths farther back, Topless Tower was third for Henry Mc-Leod in a tight fit with S. Schneiders Kerrygator. Vesuvius was making his seasonal debut locally, and his previous victories had been won at Oaklawn Park. He was timed in 1:53 over ,a slow track, and returned 5.40. Alumont, the second choice, down on the rail, took a short lead over Swell Kid as the field moved into the backstretch, and at the half -.mile marker Kerrygator moved up to assume the runner-up position as Swell Kid gave way. Kerrygator, on the outside, did considerably better and, after racing lapped on Alumont to the far turn, disposed of the rail-hugging leader and drew into a clear lead. Entering the stretch the contenders fanned out across the track with Vesuvius, who had improved his position steadily some distance out, but Reynolds drove him through the pack to take his lead, which he did not relinquish. Clear weather greeted one of the largest crowds in the records of the course as an estimated 27,000 turned out in fair but brisk weather.
