Podner Visits Winners Circle at Churchill Downs Son of Rhodes Scholar Defeats Martin Whelan by Clear Margin CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 12. — Podner, three-year-old son of Rhodes Scholar — Kind Annie, carried the white and red colors of owner, Mrs. Samuel Rosen, to a well earned triumph in the six furlongs fifth race, one of the better offerings on the afternoons program. Confidently ridden by apprentice Jerry West, who is currently leading the local reinsmen, Podner came to the middle of the track for the final test and, after disposing of Martin Whelan midway in the drive continued on gamely to repel the latter by two and one-quarter lengths. In third position three-quarters of a length to the arrear of the leaders came Howard Wells favored Foxey Rose. T. W. and A. C. Fergusons Soo Zoom, Jack A - Chambers Big Road, O. Campbells Copa Crest, Frank Spellmans Pappys Rebel and Leo J. Caillouettes Little Aud completed the select field and finished in that order. Second choice in the mutuel wagering, Podner rewarded his numerous backers 1.00, .80 and .00 across the board and negotiated the distance in 1:12%, fastest time of the day registered for six panels.
