Respingo, Prefect Form Strong Entry in Ballot Former May Pass Up Todays Race In Favor of Metropolitan Mile BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 12.— The ,000 Ballot Purse at a mile and a sixteenth heads the "Friday the Thirteenth" program at Belmont Park tomorrow. Only six have been named for this test, including Gustave Rings Respingo and Prefect. It is possible that Respingo, who has 118 to carry, will be withdrawn in favor of Prefect, who gets in with 108 and won his last start at Jamaica, as the first named is also a nominee to Saturdays Metropolitan and may be considered to rate a chance in this 5,000 test on his recent form. The Ring pair will be opposed by I. J. Collins Beau Nash, Russell A. Firestones Barrage, King Ranchs Safe Arrival and George M. Jacobsons Alairne. Beau Nash is an invader from California, where he showed signs of promise in his only start and has trained creditably. Barrage enjoyed a winning streak at Jamaica, which was rudely shattered when he failed to concede 10 pounds to Coincidence on an afternoon when that erratic veteran was in a running mood. Safe Arrival, who is the lightweight of tomorrows field under 106, has a series of good races to his credit. He will be ridden by young William Boland, a maiden apprentice who has an excellent opportunity to pay his first trip to the winners circle here. Alairne has some fair races to his credit at Jamaica, but seems unable to win and has already been beaten more than once by Respingo. Tomorrows supporting feature is the Polonaise Purse for fillies and mares at six furlongs on the main track. This dash has also lured six entries headed by Mrs. Frank Frankels South American mare, Nina Bruja, at 121 pounds. A stakes winner in Argentina, the daughter of Embrujo was I unplaced in her three starts last year and will be making her 1949 debut. She will be ■ opposed by Greentree Stables Paddleduck, i G. D. Wideners Vaudeville, Mrs. Tilyou I Christophers Mesl, Eslie Asburys Brownian i and Mrs. C. O. Iselins Shimmer. Under " 121 pounds, Nina Bruja will be conceding I her rivals from eight to 15 pounds. Paddleduck was a dismal failure in the i Firenze last week, but occasionally shows i signs of class. Vaudeville is a speedy sort t with a liking for the Belmont strip. Brownian ■ usually finishes her races well, while I Mesl and Shimmer also have the speed to be in contention all the way in what shapes up as an extremely open race.
