Coaltown in Belmont Breeze; May Be Starter in Suburban BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 12. — Calumet Farms handicap champion, Coaltown, breezed three furlongs on the training track at Belmont Park this morning, with his exercise rider holding him with every ounce of his strength all the way. The trial was timed in :38%. Coaltown is a nominee for the 0,000 Suburban Handicap, to be run here at a mile and a quarter on Memorial Day. There is even a possibility that he may start, despite the heavy impost he is certain to draw and Ben and Jimmy Jones well-established objection to imposts in excess of 130 pounds. The Suburban is generally regarded as Americas premier handicap and a victory by Coaltown would add immeasurably to his reputation, a fact of which owner Warren Wright is fully aware. Since the inaugural running in 1884, only Whisk Broom II., 139; Grey Lag, 135; Equipoise, 132, and Devil Diver, 132 have been able to win with more than 130 pounds. No other horses have been able to finish in the money with more than the Chicago maximum, though Equipoise carried 134 into second place in 1934, behind Ladysman, who carried 114. Calumets Armed won in 1946 under 130, i while King Ranchs Assault carried the I same burden the following year.
