Joseph A. Murphy, Michigan Steward, in Excellent Health FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 12. — Joseph A Murphy, dean of American racing officials and presently serving as steward representing the Michigan Racing Commission, is in excellent health and most active at the Woodward Avenue racing grounds. Looking much younger than his years and quite alert, Judge Murphy climbed to the top of the grandstand and inspected the stewards pagoda. A raconteur of note, Judge Murphy had a little story for sports scribes, who asked him just how well he felt after making the long upstairs trip to the stand. Judge Murphy related that one day last season a rider reached the stewards pagoda to question him relative to a stakes mount. "The young man was huffing and puffing like a steam engine," said the judge. "I asked him to sit down and catch his breath before he began his story. The jockey sat down for a few minutes and, before he approached the business at hand, asked Judge, how in the world do you feel after you get up here every day? " The lad got the stakes mount.
