But Why Not in Fast Trial for Metropolitan Three Rings and Mount Marcy Also Work for Belmont Stake BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 12. — King Ranchs But Why Not gave evidence that she retains the brilliant form that she showed in winning the Firenze Handicap last week when she stepped six furlongs in 1:13%, handily, over the main track at Belmont Park this morning. The filly champion of 1947, who was winning her first race since the fall of that year when she captured the Firenze, is a probable starter in Saturdays Metropolitan Mile, for which William Helis Rippey is expected to be the favorite. Mrs. E. L. Hopkins Three Rings and C. V. Whitneys Mount Marcy also worked for the Metropolitan this morning. Three Rings went seven furlongs in 1:29, handily. while Mount Marcy breezed six furlongs in 1:17%. The Metropolitan field is now expected to be composed of Vulcans Forge, 126; Rippey, 125; Mount Marcy, 122; But Why Not, 119; Faultless, 117; Three Rings, 116; Buzfuz, 115; Manyunk, 114; Chains and Royal Governor, 112, and Blue Border, 111. Several of the lighter weights have been training as though they might also go post-ward in the 5,000 fixture on the weekend.
