SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 2.— The 0,000 added Clark Handicap, named in honor of Col, M. Lewis Clark, who founded Churchill Downs and I originated the Kentucky Derby, will have : its seventy-seventh running here tomorrow. The assigned weight event, formerly called the Clark Stakes, was established in 1 1875 as a two-mile race, exclusively for " three-year-olds, and followed the Derby, then run at a mile and one-half. Most of ■ the Derby winners ran in the Clark Stakes, . but it was not until 1881 that Hindoo won 1 both races. The race remained the Clark Stakes, . specifically designed for three-year-olds, . until 1902, at which time it became the ; Clark Handicap and became open to horses 5 of all ages. Calumet Farms Whirlaway 7 was the last Derby victor to register a triumph • in the Clark. He won the latter race ! as a four-year-old in 1942. Exterminator, . winner of the 1918 "Run for the Roses" accounted for the Clark when a seven-year-old • in 1922. Fixture as Old as Derby Tomorrows field for the mile and one-sixteenth • fixture, which is as old as the Derby, shapes up as one of the more interesting " renewals in recent history. Top-weighted " member of the starting field is John A. Kinards Johns Joy, who has been j assigned 120 pounds. Named to oppose the 2 son of Bull Dog and My Auntie are Calumet - Farms Wistful, 116; C. V. Whitneys s Mr. Trouble, 114; Dixianas Shy Guy, 113; ; William H. Veenemans Black George, 112; ; Hasty House Farms Swap Out, 110, and 3 James Paddocks Royal Tulip, 105. Johns Joy, winner of last Saturdays s edition of the Churchill Downs Handicap, i, carried 118 pounds in that seven-furlong I stake in which he listed among his victims s Mr. Trouble, Wistful and Black George. The Kinard performer scored several of f his more impressive successes over the e Derby track. Include among his victories was a decisive victory in the 1948 renewal 1 of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Wistful took top honors in the Ben Ali Handicap at Keeneland previous to her arrival here. The Calumet miss endured but minimum of difficulty in adding the Lexington feature to her list of victories, but failed to race to expectations in the Churchill Downs Handicap. Wistful apparently had no mishap in her latest start when beaten approximately five and three-quarters lengths by Johns Joy. Doug Dod-son again will be in the saddle aboard the Calumet mare. Mr. Trouble finished with excellent courage when beaten by Johns Joy in their latest meeting. The Whitney racer gave every evidence that he would benefit by the added yardage of tomorrows encounter. Before his shipment to the Blue Grass, Mr. Trouble turned back a formidable field of intermediate allowance performers Gulfstream. Mr. Trouble will be ridden by Ray Adair. Sb#Guy was bested a narrow margin by John Marschs Whirling Dough in his local debut in which the winner established a new track record of 1:35% for the eight furlongs. Shy Guy was gradually overtaking the leader during the concluding strides and that effort should have served as a tightener. Johnny Adams has been assigned the mount. Church to Ride Swap Out Swap Out was among the "also rans" in the Ben Ali. The Hasty House representative has been working well since his transfer here and it may have been that he did not fancy the rather sandy Keeneland strip. The gelded son of Shut Out won three races last year. Jockey Kenneth Church will be astride. Black George, winner of the 1950 Derby Trial, in which he defeated among others King Ranchs Mid-dleground, appears to have lost his edge and may be lightly regarded. However improvement from his last race can be expected. Darrell Madden will comprise most of the 112 pounds allotted the Veene-man colorbearer. Royal Tulip finished well back of the leaders in Whirling Doughs record-smashing race after being outrun from the beginning. Tom Barrow will guide the feathery burdened gelding. Seven talented two-year-olds were named to contest the four and one-half furlong Sir Barton Purse, chief supporting attraction on the program. Several of the starters have began their careers in an auspicious manner and as a result the dash should prove popular from a speculative standpoint. Slated to answer the bugle are Miss Break, Errards Guide, Our Challenge, First Heir, Potpourri, Ave and Lonoke Flash.
