J. MURPHY Staff Correspondent SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 2. — Marion VanBergs four-year-old filly, Miss Bobbin, making her first appearance under silks since the last Sportsmans Park meeting, ran a fine race to win todays feature at the Cicero course. With jockey Thearl Williams giving her free rein for the greater part of the journey, she outran Par Boy in the first part and had enough left at the end to stave off the challenge of Mr. Fox, while the favorite, Open Way, was third. Par Boy, the second choice, who had won four of his seven starts this year, bled profusely and was eased up in the last quarter. The top event was titled the Alsab and a field of nine participated over the seven - furlong distance. Par Boy stepped out early to take a short lead, closely followed by Miss Bobbin, and the latter took over passing the grandstand the first time. Par Boy dropped out of it at the half way mark and Mr. Fox, ridden by apprentice Wid-man, became the chief contender. Miss Bobbin paid 1 and she was jockey Wil- liams second winner of the afternoon. The summerlike weather continued and a gathering of 8,936 was present. The track was fast. Skoronski Increases Lead Jockey Skoronski increased his advan- tage over Harold Keene to two winning mounts when he won with Ben Fogelsons Play Again in the seventh race. Play Again overtook the pacemaking Eye Catcher on the stretch turn and finished a length before Obstinate Si. He made it three for the day when he scored with Chicks Delight in the eighth and Osculady in the ninth. Nowloggin, who figured in a large Daily Double Monday, was also part of the com-:. bination today when he won the second race to pay 3.60. Reade Castle, who won three of his four starts at New Orleans the past winter, was dropped in claiming price from his recent poor effort and managed to get home a half-length in advance of Prefer Troutt. Nowloggin, ridden by H. Keene, scored over Donna L. Miss Crossbow, a five-year-old Texas-bred mare owned by F. E. Waldon. of Iowa, landed down in front in the third race at the expense of Gallahad Bess, who had Continued on Page Forty-Two Miss Bobbin Turns Back Bid of Mr. Fox at Sportsmans Continued from Page One made the pace. The two, who were outsiders, battled it out all the way, while the favored Shaffie was floundering well out of it. Infinity K., who was well backed in the race, threw herself in the stall gate previous to the start and after remaining prostrate for a couple of minutes was ordered scratched by the stewards . As soon as the word of the withdrawal was made public, the gelding arose, apparently none the worse for wear. An outsider wrecked the chances of the favorite in the fourth race when Like A Breeze carried Equison almost to the outside fence nearing the second turn. As a result, Seabehest, who saved ground on the rail, was the winner with Royal Challa, a game-going second. Equison, who was heavily backed, could do no better than fourth, while Like A Breeze wound up last in the eight-horse field. Jockey Harold Keene made it a double of the day and the first favorite of the afternoon scored when Show Place was an easy winner in the fifth. The Bishop racer was off in the first flight and was always three lengths or more to the good after the first quarter had been traveled. Garrett C. finished second and Kandycal was third.
