iNOTuransr Purse Brings Out Sextet Entry of Lone Eagle and Quick Fire May Be Choice In Mile and Sixteenth Test JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 2.— The I Naturalist, a ,500 mile and a sixteenth i race with allowance conditions, is the feature . of tomorrows program at Jamaica. Named in honor of a fine thoroughbred 1 imported from France by the late Joseph i E. Widener, this overnight event has attracted • a scanty field of routers, but it t makes up in quality for what it lacks in l numbers. Only a half-dozen have been l named, and there is no Naturalist among f them, you may be sure, but the six nominees . are all good campaigners and they are ; certain to provide a hotly disputed heat. Lone Eagle and Quick Fire, starting as the Gustave Ring entry, probably will draw J the most public support in the Naturalist, , and it looks as if the Washington, D. C, sportsman holds a strong hand. Lone [ Eagle, who was colt enough as a three-year-old to finish third in the St. Leger for William Woodward, will start top weight in tomorrows race with 123 pounds aboard. If this five-year-old Isolater stallion would race back to the form he showed [ in England, an event such as the Naturalist would be simple for him to take, but Lone Eagles American outings hardly sustain his European reputation. Started seven times in this country — all but his last t race at the recent Hialeah meeting — Lone j Eagle has been able to win a single race, nor was that one Florida victory too impressive. Trailed in Excelsior In his first appearance on the Metropolitan circuit, Lone Eagle was a distant trailer in the Excelsior Handicap, beaten I some six lengths by Lotowhite, Ferd, Great t Circle and seven others. He is certainly r a better horse than that showing would I indicate. In the Naturalist, however, the Ring Stables chief reliance may well be ; Lone Eagles stablemate, Quick Fire, whose - present form is far more encouraging. Were the Naturalist a handicap instead I of being an allowance affair, it is quite ! possible that secretary John Campbell [ would have assigned the Okapi four-year-old top weight. In his last, Quick Fire was only beaten three parts of a length by County Delight and Rock Span. It is true I that he was receiving nine pounds from i County Delight, but the latter went on to run a smashing race in last Saturdays ; Grey Lag Handicap, just missing behind 1 such top performers as Cochise and Ferd. Off that performance, and weighted here with 118, Quick Fire is the one to beat. Free Strider, 119; Wide Request, 119; : Ted M., 114, and Monte, 113, complete the J field in the Naturalist, sixth event on the ; afternoons program. Ted M., from Clarence . Buxtons barn, looks like the main , contender. The Peace Chance stallion has , been out twice this season, both his starts at the current Jamaica meeting, and his 1 last behind Why Not Now and On the ! Mark was a respectable effort. Racing I right with the pace all the way in that t outing at tomorrows distance, Ted M. weakened slightly in the final furlong. The time of that race — 1:44% for the mile and J J a sixteenth — indicates the quality of the ; performance, and it may be that Ted M. • was still a little short. A victory on the I part of any of the others will be an upset. Fifth event on the program, the six-furlong Medea Purse will be fully as interesting as the feature, particularly to horsemen, . since this dash will give us a look at h Belair Studs highly regarded Vulcania. This filly, by Some Chance, out of Belairs 5 great mare, Vagrancy, is now regarded as 3 one of the most promising candidates for r such classic stakes as the Acorn and I Coaching Club American Oaks. In her last t start at Jamaica, Vulcania, still a little I short of top condition, dead-heated with : 1 Next Move for fourth place in the Correction Handicap. Belairs chestnut filly had 1 forced all the pace in the Correction. She 2 will be even sharper tomorrow.
